Gastroenterology | What is Gastroenterology?

Gastroenterology is a branch of medicine which deals with the study of the structure, functions, and diseases of digestive organs. The word “gastroenterology” was coined from three separate Ancient Greek words: Gastros meaning stomach, enteron meaning intestine, and logos meaning reason. This special study (gastroenterology) of the digestive system includes visualizing and understanding diseases in the mouth, throat, esophagus, stomach, intestines down to the anus (whole digestive tract).

Physicians practicing or specializing in gastroenterology are called Gastroenterologists. The study of the alimentary canal, gastroenterology, does not only deal with studying the anatomy and physiology of the digestive tract. Gastroenterology also include studying the pathology or pathophysiology of the alimentary canal. Gastroenterology is a branch of medicine which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal tract diseases and/or disorders.
