Is the 5-Year Nursing Curriculum in the Philippines a Feasible Proposal?
The proposed 5-year Nursing Curriculum in the Philippines by virtue of CHED MO No 5 has raised concerns from all sectors of the society particularly Nursing students and parents. The proposal of CHED to implement a 5-year Nursing Curriculum has been viewed as waste of money and time by concerned parties. Here in Ilocos Norte, as part of my freelance research work, the results of our series of consultations with parents, clinical instructors and some school administrators are the same – people are apathetic about the plan to implement a 5-year curriculum in BS Nursing starting SY 2009-2010.
For the better understanding of the 5-year Nursing Curriculum, I will be posting a little later the whole curriculum. For readers who are members of the academe, your comments will be highly valued since this will add to existing data this author already has.
However, partial results analyzed reveal that the 5-Year Nursing Curriculum is generally viewed by many as “insignificant and waste of resources”. This now brings us to ponder whether this proposal is really a feasible solution to improving Nursing education in the Philippines. As a researcher, I cannot readily give an answer. This is because I would like to be impartial on this matter and let the data do the talking. I will have my personal take on this later, of course.
Data gathered will be revealed after collation and further research on this subject. The method used in gathering data for this Nursing research was quanti-quali (quantitative-qualitative combo) since statistics and qualitative verbalization of opinions were obtained from select but qualified respondents. Is the 5-Year Nursing Curriculum a feasible plan? We’ll find out when the majority has spoken.

Generally, i think ang main concern dito ng majority is the additional expenses. Pero if we look the effect in the long term, mas ok siguro. Speaking of quality education, that does not guarantee kung 4 years o 5 years ang course in general. I think the government should look mainly kung san nagssiimula ang education.

Ambo,
Yun nga kapatid. Experimental itong 5-year nursing curriculum na to.

Kuya,
I’ve heard about this nga. I agree additional burden na naman for the parents, matagal din yong one year at mabigat din. Ganyan din dati sa Pharmacy course eh, from 4 yrs ginawang 5 yrs tapos ibinalik na naman to 4 yrs. Nakadepende ba talaga ang quality of education sa kung ilang years ang course mo? I reckon they should eliminate those subjects na di naman talaga vital sa course.
Oi kuya I’m doing great! sana maka chat tayo one of these days pg di ka na busy…ingat po!

Twinks,
According to my data, ganun na nga. Yan ang opinion ng majority about the new nursing curriculum – gastos lang dahil aabot sa 5 years in total yung expenses.

For me 5 year curriculum is much more better than four year curriculum for the whole learning of students. Kung ang mga parents nag-alala sa gastusin, are they not also concern of their children’s concern, na madali makatapos and yet failed sa board exams? the same way gagastos pa rin dahil tha student will still have to retake the board exam they failed. Also, the students cannot graduate if the they lack cases and eventually, they will go on completion duties in which they will again have to pay for that purpose to complete their requirements. Aside from that, I think there’ll be no summer classes on a five year curriculum. In a four year curriculum there’s summer classes. In fact two summers is equivalent to one year also. Hope this should be studied more for the good quality of nursing education. Thank you

More doesn’t always mean better.
Adding another year isn’t a guarantee that schools will produce better nursing graduates and better RNs.
CHED’s policies should be need-driven. Do schools need it and verbalize such need?
If there is no such need, what is this new policy is for?
Furthermore, the government should do something to prevent the deluge of jobless RNs in the country.
PRC, even without the recommendation from the President, has the power to change its policy as regards the taking of licensure exams for nurses.
Instead of twice a year, licensure exams may only be given once a year.
That way, hindi babaha ang RNs na walang trabaho sa bansa, plus new graduates can spend the entire year on self review or whatever, in order to do well in the once-a-year boards licensure exams (lest they wait for another 12 months before retaking).
I would assume that both CHED and PRC are composed of intelligent and experienced policy makers, pero nakakapagtaka lang na parang nakakabobo ang policies nila.

Warrior In Scrubs,
Thanks for your comment. I hope the CHED and PRC people will be able to read reactions like this one.

hi..
i think a 5 year course is better.. kasi specialized na yung subjects plus walang summer.. at least the students will be able to relax their mind.. nursing is a very tiresome course.. plus diba way way back naman 5 years naman talaga yung nursing? which i think produced more disciplined and competent nurses.. or may be it’s just because yung generation ngayon is “abroad” motivated or pinilit lang ng parents? .. regardless.. i think a 5 year course is better para lalong makita yung competence ng mga student nurses and they need RLE duties kesa minor subjects
