Red Mobile Competes With Sun Cellular for the Lowest Call Rates
So far, Sun Cellular’s call rates are the perceived lowest in the Philippines with its Call and Text Unlimited (CTU) plans. Red Mobile, on the other hand, is making a buzz with its guaranteed per-minute rate (50 cents per minute to other Red Mobile cell phones and one peso per minute to cell phones powered by other networks).
Red Mobile, by the way, is powered by Smart Telecoms. Smart now powers 3 SIMs – Smart Buddy and variants, Talk n Text and Red Mobile. Awww, I almost forgot, their cell sites also power the unreliable Smartbro and the slow Smartbro wireless internet which is definitely a waste of time and money.
The question is “Can Red Mobile deliver its promise to give clear signals to its subscribers?” Also, how long will this promo last? Will it last until Red Mobile has not captured its target market share?
Just like Filipino consumers’ experiences with telecommunication networks’ promos, I honestly believe Red Mobile’s promo will not last for long. I think it will only last for 12 months or less. A few years ago (this is a personal experience), Sun Cellular’s launch became an instant hit to Filipino Cell phone addicts who can call other Sun Cellular subscribers all day long for unlimited number of minutes. When the sales were picking up and the subscriber base broadened a bit, Sun Cellular cut down their plans to certain hours of the day. Suddenly, it was no longer unlimited. I am not quite sure when did I stop using Sun Cellular. I think I stopped using the service when the 24/7 call time was set between 12midnight-5am (something like that). And who on earth will I call during those hours? Not only were the select hours cut short but the active call time was also programmed to reset every 15 minutes, hence, you have to redial every 15 minutes and sometimes even have to wait for an hour to reconnect. Cell sites were obviously overloaded
Now, I am just curious with Red Mobile because its commercial on TV is starting to annoy me. After some research, I found out that you can’t get the SIM to work in a non-3G phone. I personally think that’s crap. However, in a business perspective, I’ll try the service for a couple of days or maybe weeks to test its reliability. This is because I’m planning to establish a small cell phone store/repair shop and it could be inevitable to sell Red Mobile SIM cards. Budget up to this time is yet to be determined. I will update this as soon as testing is done.
