Health Risks of Uranium Radiation Exposure

In the Philippines, people who suffer from diseases caused by uranium radiation exposure are left unprotected - no protection from the law to run after companies who employed them. As of this writing, this author knows no law that has been enacted here regarding the protection of workers who have been detailed in nuclear power plants and refineries utilizing uranium as source of energy.

There are many health risks to exposure to uranium - skin diseases, leukemia, lung cancer, skin cancer, and other complications. These are common consequences because uranium is a radioactive material. Cells get damaged at a much faster rate and organs begin to fail after exposure to amounts that the body can no longer handle.

In the United States, Congress established the RECA radiation exposure compensation act to provide protection to individuals who have contracted certain cancers and other serious diseases as a result of their exposure to radiation released during above-ground nuclear weapons tests or as a result of their exposure to radiation during employment in underground uranium mines. This is one good way of protecting American workers in the future (some sort of an insurance policy) because some of these workers have been reported to have developed above-stated diseases and conditions. The US government, being the primary guardian ot the people’s health, did really something right for those whose health conditions were affected by long-term exposure to this element. RECA is similar to another law designed to protect people who have developed mesothelioma - a form of cancer that is caused by asbestos exposure.
