China-made Milk and Dairy Products Contaminated by Excessive Melamine Content

Recent news on public health in the Philippines and other countries regarding China-made milk and dairy products are scaring millions of people. The products were found to contain excessive amounts of melamine (which when taken in excess could be fatal). Is melamine really that bad? The answer is no. Malamine is in fact used in many milk and dairy products but within safety standards and in a highly controlled environment. One company that uses melamine in the production of its milk products is Nestle.

At the moment, the melamine scare is the highest public health concern in the Philippines and other Asian countries where milk and dairy products made by Chinese manufacturers have been distributed on a massive scale.

To elucidate this, an excerpt from a news article from the MSN website is presented here. To wit,

Melamine is mainly used for making plastic but when added to milk, the toxic chemical can make it appear richer in protein.

“Based on what we’ve seen in the press I would say, this looks like an attempt to deceive the public by milk producers who seem to be trying to water down their milk,” said Dale Rutstein, a Beijing-based spokesman for UNICEF, the UN’s children agency.

Melamine Content in China-made milk and dairy productsUNICEF earlier issued a statement with the World Health Organisation, saying it had “observed with great sadness and concern the unfolding story of tainted infant formula produced by Sanlu and other companies.”

“Whilst any attempt to deceive the public in the area of food production and marketing is unacceptable, deliberate contamination of foods intended for consumption by vulnerable infants and young children is particularly deplorable,” the statement said.

Hou, of the product quality agency, told his audience at the Beijing conference that a new food safety infrastructure was sorely needed.

“China is a large food-producing country, and the number of food items needed to be tested is growing very fast,” he said.

In another news, Macau recently found out that Chinese-made chocolate-filled cookies were also contaminated by excessive amounts of Melamine. In Singapore, the government issued an order that milk products made in China should be incinerated.

In the Philippines, milk products made in China are still being inspected and tested in laboratories for excessive melamine content. Incineration of these contaminated products are expected to be done because it’s the only way we can dispose of these unhealthy milk and dairy products. Public health should be the most important concern of any government. It is only by way of protecting the people’s health can a nation grow. Like what Moses said in the movie Ten Commandments, “The strong make many, the weak make few and the dead make none“.

I agree that the mother’s breast milk is better than any formula milk in the market.

    Twinks,

China-made products (including electronic gadgets, tools and household equipment) are really inferior. The quality is poor. Now that their milk products are contaminated by melamine, the Chinese people are themselves demanding that milk manufacturers in China should improve their ways and have more social responsibility.
