Survival Kits During Typhoons and Rainy Season

Since the Philippines is frequently visited by typhoons and the rainy season here is in fact longer than summer, I’d like to offer you some tips on how to prepare for typhoons. Ilocos Norte alone is still soaked in water after facing four typhoons in two months. We can categorically call these “survival kits during typhoons and rainy season” because they are compartmentalized (just to put things in order).

These are some of the many things that will definitely be of help when typhoons strike. Remember, this set of tips or survival kits may not apply to you and your location but try to browse the list, in any case:

Health/Medicine Kit

  • Ibuprofen/Paracetamol/Phenylpropanolamine Maleate (for cold, flu, cough)
  • Loperamide (for intestinal hypermotility, diarrhea)
  • Vitamins to combat illnesses when the rainy days become longer than expected
  • Betadine, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide and other antiseptics
  • Bandages and/or band aids in cases of cuts and burns

Household Kit

  • Flashlights/Lamps (small, compact and powerful ones are highly recommended)
  • If electric/rechargeable flashlights/lamps are not available, a kerosene lamp can be used as substitute
  • Working/charged batteries for flashlights or lamps (extra batteries should also be prepared)
  • Candles, matches and lighters
  • Charged cell phones and extra batteries (for communication)

Kitchen/Grocery/Food Items

  • Clean, potable water
  • Noodles, rice, bread and sardines (coffee optional, but in my case, it’s a must-have. lol!)
  • Wood and coal (in case Liquefied Petroleum Gas or LPG runs out)
  • Stock kerosene

Automotive Kit

  • Extra fuses
  • Handheld flashlight
  • Extra gasoline

Also, before the typhoon’s arrival, you should check if your motor vehicles are in good running condition so that when emergency cases happen, they won’t fail to serve you when you need them the most. Check if the batteries are fully charged. If the typhoon is expected to last for a couple of days, then check your gas tank if it contains enough fuel. Other parts to check should be lights (front and rear), horn, brakes and water in the radiator. Let your motor vehicle run idle for about 10 minutes to ensure that the battery is charged (because not using your vehicle for a couple of days will discharge the battery especially during cold weather). Get some extra fuses because the lights and horn may not work properly when any of the fuses is soaked in water. A corroded fuse terminal will fail.
