What is With Number 888? Will it Bring Good or Bad Luck?

The opening of the Beijing 2008 Olympics was scheduled on August 8, 2008 or 080808 or 888 (acceptable). Oh, I’m sorry but that is a few hours from now, right? Well, here’s a few superstitious beliefs associated with 888 and other significant numbers in numerology.

  1. Car number plates of 8888, 888, 88, 8, 168, 668 are a sign of good fortune.
  2. Numbers 4444, 444, 44, 4 and 9413 are extremely bad. (Some buildings in Malaysia replaced ‘4th Floor’ to 3A, and house address 44 and 4 to 43A and 3A.)
  3. The number “4″ is actually unlucky and it means death.

In addition, based on some write-ups online, superstitions and beliefs make certain definite impacts on the consumer behavior and till now we practically lack in understanding this type of behavior and their implications upon the decision making process.

Irrational beliefs and their impacts on an individual’s behavior was also one of the main focuses of this study, according to Thomas Kramer and Lauren Block, the lead researchers.

These beliefs have a huge cost in terms of money. For instance, every Friday the 13th gives a net loss of $800 to $900 million to the United States economy. A Chinese businessperson spent 54,000 Yuan’s to obtain a lucky license plate with number “888”.Continental Airlines’ announced that it will offer an $888 flight to Beijing with the “Lucky You” slogan.

Kramer and Block referred to one previous study findings which says that the Taiwanese customers prefer to buy a radio with price tag of $888 instead of the one which had price of $777. There was a 15% increase in these radio sets just because they were sold at with “lucky numbered price tags”.

Hey, don’t count the Philippines and Filipinos when it comes to superstitions (we have lots of superstitions here, for your info). In Parañaque, more than 200 couples participated in the mass wedding today (8/8/08 or 080808) believing that it will bring them good fortune throughout their marriage. Babies were also intentionally delivered by their moms (mostly in the caesarean section of course) hoping that their birthday will bring them good luck throughout their life.

On the other hand, Feng shui (Punsoy or Pungsoy in Filipino) experts believe otherwise.  Feng shui practitioners think 888 is not a lucky number and will bring bad luck. Partly, they might be right because before the start of the scheduled opening of the Beijing 2008 Olympics, the place where the opening ceremonies will be held (Bird’s Nest Stadium) was covered with thick smoke and dust (but most probably due to fireworks testing).

At any rate, my lucky number since I was young is the number 6, not the number 8. I have proven that many times before in Bingo games, roulette games during fiestas and raffles lol! Well, it could only be coincidence but who really knows if there is really something called “luck”.

How about you? Do you have a lucky number? Do you think 888 (or 8/8/08) is a lucky number/date?

  4. Joy,

Maybe 888 or 8/8/08 is really lucky. According to some mathematians in the old days, the number 8 is mysterious number because it doesn’t actually have a beginning and an end. The loop just keeps going and going. That is why they turned the number 8 45 degress to represent “infinity”. That means the infinity sign is nothing but a number 8 in horizontal orientation.
