Texting Can Cause Accidents and Injuries

Addicted to cell phones or texting? Think again before pushing those buttons. Reports indicate that texting while doing something else like walking on the streets, biking and other activities can cause injury or even fatalities. As they say, don’t do two things at the same time to prevent accidents and injuries. Focus is the key to doing something right.

Story Number 1

The warning came too late for Barack Obama’s adviser: Don’t walk and text at the same time.

Obama aide Valerie Jarrett fell off a Chicago curb several weeks ago while her thumbs were flying on her Blackberry.

“I didn’t see the sidewalk and I twisted my ankle,” Jarrett said. “It was a nice wake-up call for me to be a lot more careful in the future, because I clearly wasn’t paying attention and I should have.”

Jarrett got off easy and didn’t need medical attention.

Story Number 2

“It’s tragic,” said Dr. Linda Lawrence, president of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), who noted that her colleagues across the country are anecdotally reporting cases, “among teens and young adults, in particular, who are arriving in emergency departments with serious and sometimes fatal injuries because they were not paying attention while texting.”

“We see this every day, since we are [in] downtown Chicago, with lots of people walking around,” said Dr. James Adams, MD, professor and chair of the department of emergency medicine, Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University. “People are texting and they trip and fall on their faces – usually people in their 20s. We see a lot of face, chin, mouth [and] eye injuries from falls.”

Even worse, said Dr. Adams, are the injuries that result from people texting and causing collisions with bikers, rollerbladers and others.

Now, think twice before putting those cellular phones into texting modes while doing something else either inside or outside your homes. That could really get you into a lot of trouble especially if you lose your balance. Stay safe. :-)

It could be that my site is busy and has many visitors kaya nade-delay yung updating ng RSS mo. That’s one possible reason. Di ko kasi kontrolado yan eh.

  2. Fren, I’m addicted to cellphones but not to texting. I don’t know why, but I prefer sending sms from the computer. When I’m outside, I’d rather call if somebody’s texting me. About this post, it’s true na marami talagang naaksidente while texting.

    Twinks,

Bago yan ah. Parang commercial yung sinabi mo. Hahaha! But yes, I agree. My friend got hit by a motorbike because he was texting on the streets and he was out of way (my friend). It was his fault. Nasa highway sya tapos di sya tumitingin sa kalsada habang tumatawid o naglalakad kaya hayun nahagip sya.

What is it with the texting?

It’s really irritating to hang with friends that cannot avoid whipping out their cell phones and text people…

    Why hang out with them?

Hours wasted with friends that are texting away while you just sit there. Honestly, it makes me mad.

Especially, when the people texting are in the same room!

  8. biking while texting – daming mga Hapon na gumagawa nito! Lalo na yung mga teens and siguro below 30’s. Nakakainis… sarap banggain, lalo na pag kasalubong mo. Kahit na nag-impose na nang law against this one, marami pa rin ang pasaway. I think 50,000 yen yata ang penalty pag nahuli,e.
