Surf for Health

Surfing is becoming more popular in the Philippines especially in the Visayas. Thanks to the marvelous beaches in the Visayas. But hey, don’t count Ilocos Norte out just yet. We have great beaches here, too. If you have been here, you know how beautiful our beaches are (especially in Pagudpud).

Surfing is good for your health. It develops cardiovascular strength, good stamina and balance. Many surfers feel they can last for hours doing physical work. It takes some training before you can successfully ride a surfboard. Just like riding a bicycle, your legs should be strong and you should possess good balancing skills and body coordination.

My friends here in Ilocos Norte love surfing but for me, well… that’s not my thing. Surfing the internet is my cup of tea, not surfing on the waves. lol!

Surfing is perhaps most popular in Hawaii where there are many Ilocanos. The most common type of surfboards surfers use are longboards. For a short history of surfing, wikipedia stated that

Around the beginning of the 20th century, Hawaiians living close to Waikiki began to revive surfing, and soon re-established surfing as a sport. Duke Kahanamoku, “Ambassador of Aloha,” Olympic medalist, and avid waterman, helped expose surfing to the world. Kahanamoku’s role was later memorialized by a 2002 first class letter rate postage stamp of the United States Postal Service. Author Jack London wrote about the sport after having attempted surfing on his visit to the islands. Surfing progressed tremendously in the 20th century, through innovations in board design and increased public exposure.

Surfing’s development and culture was centered primarily in three locations: Hawaii, Australia, and California. Until the 1960s, it had only a small following even in those areas. The release of the film Gidget boosted the sport’s popularity immensely, moving surfing from an underground culture into a national fad and packing many surf breaks with sudden and previously unheard of crowds. B-movies and music based on surfing and Southern California beach culture (Beach Party films) as it exploded, formed most of the world’s first ideas of surfing and surfers.

From the 1960s fad years to the creation and evolution of the short board in the late 1960s and early 1970s to the performance hotdogging of the 1980s and the professional surfing of the 1990s, typified by Kelly Slater.

There are many shops selling surfboards online. The products come in many forms, shapes and materials.

Just a word of caution: before you buy surfboards online, be sure to check if the website you’re buying something from can provide you with the highest possible security. Online transactions are sometimes risky. Be careful. Take some time to conduct a little research on the site’s reputation. It’s not easy to divulge important information like your bank account number, credit card number and others. Spend a little more time surfing the net about previous buyers’ comments on the website offering you products and services before finally purchasing anything. Online shopping is fun but it would be more fun if you know you’re getting the right protection from fraudulent sites and individuals who make money by stealing information from hardworking people like us.
