WordPress 2.6 Upgrade
After the release of WordPress 2.5, the upgrades of WordPress have become more frequent lately. Version 2.5.1 was released shortly after 2.5. This time, WordPress 2.6 will be out soon. The scheduled release will be on July 7 or 14 2008. Isn’t the team of WordPress developers upgrading the software more rapidly than it should? With this rate of upgrading this great publishing tool, I won’t be shocked if the developers will release WordPress 5.0 at the end of 2008.
I’m not even warmed up with WordPress 2.5.1 because I have upgraded my other sites to this version 3 days ago. Before that, I was using WordPress 2.5 on those blogs. I upgraded to WP 2.5.1 because I found out that version 2.5 was buggy. It was incompatible with many of my plugins and my MySQL databases had a lot of problems in handling processes and queries. In general, blogging became more difficult with WordPress 2.5.
I hope WordPress 2.5.1 is going to be great because at the moment, I’m experiencing no problems (yet) with this version.
For the curious and maybe furious WordPress users, here are what you can expect from WordPress 2.6:
- Version/revision saves a copy of a post every time you edit it, allows you to view (not edit) each of those copies (revisions), Shows forward (in time) diffs between any two revisions.
- Add paging of Themes in Design panel
- Word Count displayed when writing and editing posts and pages
- Press This bookmarklet
- Add sorting to gallery
- Export/import post excerpts
- Theme Previewer
- Check (assigned) Categories at top Category box in Write/Manage Post
- Show when a term is both a tag and a category
- Wider Profile fields
- TinyMCE 3.1
- Two categories can have sub-categories with the same name
I hope Wordpress 2.6 is a much more stable release than its predecessors. I am sincerely hoping that it will handle MySQL queries and processes better. Never mind the graphical user interface if it’s much simpler. Personally, I don’t mind about the GUI. All I care about is the new version’s ability to handle background processes faster and more reliably.
For this site, I will stick with WordPress 2.3.3 for now because it’s still serving me well so far. I will test WordPress 2.5.1 and 2.6 in my other blogs before using either one of them in this site. After testing, I will share my findings with you by way of updating this post or creating a new one related to this.

Pwede ba, kaka-download ko lang sa 2.5.1 at about to upgrade pa lang my site, may bago na naman. Walang katapusang versions talaga ang WP oo. So far, wala namang probs sa plugins ko ang 2.5.1 after proving them in my local WP.
At ano naman yang TinyMCE sa 2.6? Parang tiny mice, baka magiging magulo ang site natin sa mga mice na yan, hahaaa!

Mhy,
I’m not really sure why WordPress keeps updating. It has really become frequent like updating antivirus databases.

Gladits,
Fren, I agree. Imagine, I just upgraded to Wordpress 2.5.1 a few days then here comes to version 2.6… I was really caught off-guard with the upgrade. I really didn’t expect the new WordPress to be released that soon.

Amor,
Wordpress upgrade from 2.5.1 to 2.6 did take only about two months (if I’m not mistaken). The revision was really too quick.

Basically, WP needs to move away from MySQL into Postgresql. MySQL does NOT hold up against anything more than a few hundred thousand rows.
