PAGASA’s Weather Reporting is Erroneous and Inaccurate

The inaccuracy of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) is truly unbelievable. I was watching the news last night and their alleged satellite video of typhoon Frank shows that Ilocos Norte was flagged as Signal number 2 where in fact there’s no raindrop or morning dew in this province for the past 15 days. I was laughing at the report because many people think our streets here are flooded and trees have fallen on the ground due to gusty winds and thunderstorms (wow, weather terms, baby!). Ilocos Norte is dry as the Sahara desert at the moment and everyone here finds it difficult to breathe because of the lack of moisture in the atmosphere.

This is an age-old issue. Most of PAGASA’s equipment are not updated, obsolete and inaccurate. I’ve written about this in our school paper in the early 90’s. I was in first year college then. Seventeen years have passed and yet the situation remains the same. What a joke!

Where have all the fundings gone? Have they gone astray to the pockets of government officials (which is “normal” in Filipino culture)? Weather prediction or forecasting is very important all the time and everywhere. Weather forecasts guide travelers, event planners and even ordinary citizens like us. They provide that much-needed insight on what to expect when you travel or go out of your house. They provide ideas as to whether you should go out or stay at home. If you’re on the road, it’s always a good thing to know if it’s going to be a sunny day or a rainy day along your travel path from point A to point B. However, if you have unreliable instruments or perform questionable instrumentation, then that would be a huge problem because it will mislead a lot of people relying on accurate data for their daily guide on weather and course of action.

  3. Yes, I was thinking about that when I heard the news about the ship that capsized over the weekend. Iniisip ko, hindi ba sila aware na may impending typhoon when they left the port? Was this the effect of PAGASA’s inaccurate forecast? This type of tragedy could be prevented if given the proper warning. I am really saddened by what happened when I heard this news. :(

    elaine,

that’s exactly the problem. had they known earlier that a storm was coming, they could have prevented the death of hundreds aboard the ship.
