New Philippine Nursing Curriculum and Opposing Views

What is your opinion on the New Nursing Curriculum in the Philippines? This is a relatively new issue in the academic sector of our country. Why? Many Pinoys take up BS Nursing because of its promising future (that is, if you have the luck and opportunity to land a good job abroad).

Photo of a NurseAccording to reports, in a bid to ensure the quality of future nurses, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has ordered the addition of two new subjects in the nursing curriculum that will focus on teaching freshmen nursing students the ethics and commitment involved in the profession.

The subjects Theoretical Foundation in Nursing and Fundamentals of Nursing Practice will be added to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) curriculum starting school year 2008-2009 as contained in CHED Order Number 5 series of 2008. In Ilocos Norte, Nursing schools have confirmed that they will implement this order starting this school year, 2008-2009.  Are these two new subjects in the New Nursing Curriculum in the Philippines necessary?

Dr. William Medrano, CHED executive director, said the move was in line with recommendations of the Technical Committee on Nursing Education composed of luminaries in the field of nursing.

Medrano stressed that the addition of the two subjects came before the so-called canister scandal at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu, also known as black suede scandal which really created a huge controversy and put a big question mark on the ethical practices of health workers (like doctors and nurses) here in the Philippines. “The order was issued before that scandal. The move to add the two subjects came as a result of a recommendation made by the Technical Committee,” Medrano said.

But while the move was praised by nursing school deans and hospital administrators, school owners and administrators opposed the order. This is primarily due to financial constraints, thus, parents will have a more difficult time sending their children to college and others fear that additional expenditures (with the addition of two new subjects in the Nursing curriculum) is totally impractical and unnecessary.

Your thoughts, please? Feel free to comment as this concerns everyone who is in one way or another involved in Nursing education (administrators, policy makers, parents, students, teachers, benefactors, etc.)

  1. I don’t understand, Kuya. We always boast of our highly capable nurses who graduated from here. Many of them already are doing their jobs with flying colors outside of the country, baket kailangan pang dagdagan ng subjects sa curriculum? Dagdag gastos na naman? Dagdag pahirap sa mga magulang? While those 2 new subjects are highly important, would that mean RNs who previously haven’t took the subjects are less committed and less ethical? Would it be an assurance that nursing graduates would be more committed and ethical? I don’t think so…

the foundation of nursng curriculum that has been newly offered in various colleges and universities can be traced back 10 to 20 decades ago in which GN served as the springboard priori to the BSN supplemental units to comply the degree. basically, it will help the students to hone the primordial domains of learning – cognitive, affective and psychomotor. In the recent ADCPN convention (2009) the locus of the 5 year nursing curriculum will give much emphasis to the skills of the students. Yes, that is true. Nursing does not only confine itself to the knowledge based alone. However, the implementation of the nursing curriculum is not the answer to the devastating status quo of nursing profession. It is in the hands of the administrators to assess its capabilities and competitive advantage on what they can offer to their various stakeholders. Integrate the quality management system approaches and its core elements to yield a better program because the standards that are set in the local setting do not suffice the global requirements (as stated in the Global Standards for Nursing Education, WHO, 2008). The QMS has been an imperative tool utilized by myriad of nursing institutions in global perspectives.

  2. I don’t see any difference sa bagong subjects na yan. Alam mo kapatid when i was in school, wish ko nga maging 2-3 years na lang ang nursing. Yung tipong major lang ang dapat. Tapos 1 year sa minor di ba. Demetrio! lol

  3. Bro, Ang hirap mag paaral ngayun ng Nursing. I have one who is now on her 4th year. I have a friend who had also a 4th year Nursing student and was force to stop sending his other child to school just to let the other finish first. That move will be a big burden to parents like us.One neighbor of mine had decided to stop schooling this school year.He is on his 2nd year Nursing also.

    ennaid,

at the moment, I do not know any source of reference materials for the new subject in the New Nursing curriculum. This is because these subjects are new – Theoretical Foundation in Nursing and Fundamentals of Nursing Practice. Maybe the books are still in publication but not yet distributed in the market right now.

  13. Hi guys! i am a student nurse and just want to say that nursing is not an easy course and i really wanted to make my life easy so the new curriculum really sounds bad. however, when we think of it, our soon-to-be profession requires us to be excellent enough to provide the care our patients need. Nursing is not all about the compensation you get; rather, it is about caring and nothing more. The two additional subjects, if i am not mistaken, are needed to really emphasize nursing as a science and eventaully an art, that nursing is a caring profession. I was disappointed to read from one of the comments that bedside nursing is easy. IT IS NOT. remember, the life of the patient is in our hands. we do not need mediocre nurses here!! MEDIOCRITY MAY KILL A PERSON! I also believe that the addition of hours in the clinical duty is necessary becasue some nursing students do not have yet the basic competence and skills of a beginning professional (this is based on my observation and interview of several nursing educators). isa pa, suggestion ninyo ay maglagay ng foreign language course instead na yung life and works of rizal…isipin ninyo, kailangan nating pag-aralan ito para maibalik sa ating kamalayan ang ninakaw na cultural identity sa atin ng mga espanyol, kano, at hapon. base sa aking napansin sa mag comments dito, tila nawawala na nga ang pagkakakilanlan ng mga pilipino sa kanilang mga sarili…nakakaawa naman…

  15. Those two subjects I believe should be a part of a BSN curriculum. Those are basic courses in North America. What the Education Dept is to delete some courses which are not very important. For example, Nutrition.. this is just a topic which could be integrated to Fundamentals of Nursing; another one is Computer…it could be just a topic of another subject.

  20. What is your problem in the new curriculum? I can’t see anything different in it. In fact they could help student nurses more credible to be a registered nurse. I am a student(nursing) actually, I have been exposed to these two subjects just last year and they do add up to my knowledge. I think the problem is in you guys. You are viewing it negatively. Anyway, you are entitled for you own opinion and you deserve it. But the point is if you are really deserving to be a professional nurse then time will make a way for that matter. If your not then it’s not yet your time, maybe because you didn’t gave some effort and one factor also is that, you are lacking on some of the nursing concepts. One concept actually is very important in making your future, so which is which? one concept or two missed? or a lifetime achievement?

  21. Now this bring the issue in my workplace regarding the BSN program of the Philippines.

Andrew Sivak RN said on his email that he has problem of recognizing BSN from foreign coutries, like Philippines and Indonesia, just because they just pass NCLEX and language proficiency exam does not mean that the degree is equivalent to the American University. He added the Philippines train nurses for foreign export in order to send remittances home.A number of schools have opened solely for the purpose of this. His comments outrage all the Filipino nurses in this institution.
