Fixing Hard Drive Errors and A Bunch of Other Problems

I have been fixing my computer for problems involving hard drives, memory and video cards for the last 3 days now. It’s a good thing I know the ins and outs of a computer and how to troubleshoot them. It so happens that my computers (desktop and laptop) are already old and that they need not just replacement of parts but a total replacement. This is as if they are both yelling at me (the owner) “Retire me, boss!!!”

My hard drives have been failing since March and the sad thing is I was not able to recover any data from my hard drives despite the fact that I was able to reinstall Windows XP on both units. Whenever I use a hard drive recovery tool, some data are still lost.

Since March, my contest details (scores on top commentators, best commentators, top taggers) have been stored electronically and most of these data (not all) have been wiped out from my hard drive. Regular readers of this site know that there were days when I won’t blog for 4 or 5 straight days. I just did not want to blog about them because it may not help. Computer problems are technical and I can still solve them myself.

However, my hard drive, memory and video card problems have become recurring. They are actually bothering me. My hard drives are more than 4 years old (two 40GB Seagate and an 8.5GB Quantum). My memory (SDRAM and DDR1 + DDR2) are getting worse due to several factors like extreme heat during summer, age, and seemingly inferior manufacturing. Class B memories can only take so much. Now, I’m planning to buy a 1GB and 2GB modules for my laptop and desktop, respectively.

It’s devastating at times. Some of my precious researches in nursing (stored in my two main drives) have been erased/unrecovered. Amor, a good blogger-friend, was luckier than me for having recovered her files using Recovery Console. You should read her article about using the said method to recover your files and/or restore your erroneous Windows installation. Me? I had one big mistake. I turned off all System Restore in Windows XP. Next time, I should backup the whole system. Better yet I should buy a larger capacity hard drive.

  1. Jess, at times like this…I let hubby fix it for me, hehehe! I think you should upgrade your hardwares regularly, not just hard drives. :-)

  2. Mhy,

Maraming computer units and tinatamaan pag ganitong summer especially old and weary ones. Also, walang aircon dati dito sa bahay kaya aggravated.

It won’t boot ulit, puro long beeps lang. Sabi nung pinsan ni Hubby baka daw marumi lang yung memory card at cpu fan, kaya ayun naglakas loob na akong buksan at linisin yun. Tama nga, dahil heto nakakapag computer ulit ako. Di rin ako gumagamit ng aircon sa pc, puro airconwari lang, as in fan, hehe. Last year pinalinisan ko na to, ngayon lang naulit. I learned a lesson, dapat pla talaga nililinis ang loob nito. I know it before but I just took it for granted. Anyway, post ko na one of these days yung how i was able to recover my files thru recovery console. Pag may budget na ako para dito, I’m planning to upgrade or buy a new unit. More than 4 years old na rin kc to, haha! Parang nagmamaka-awa ng magretire eh! :D

    Fren,

usually pag long beeps yung sound warning sa memory yun. may codes kasi yung mga beeps pag may error yung computer. tip lang: clean the memory module/s with an eraser. yung pins lang ang linisin mo ha. tapos yung banks sa motherboard dapat linisin mo with soft-bristled brush like a paintbrush. avoid touching other parts except the inside parts of the banks. kahit ikaw lang ang gumawa nito or si hubby ok lang.
