Monitor Your Web Traffic Using Free Online Statistics Software

Many webmasters and bloggers want traffic for their sites. The degree of desire for traffic varies from one webmaster to another. How much traffic a webmaster wants is another concept from how efficient can he monitor it using softwares available free online. Traffic statistics is important for any site in any niche especially if the site is being monetized. This site you are in right now is no exemption. I have also written in the past about the Importance of Mathematics to Blogging. Read it for more info on the topic.

For web traffic monitoring purposes, you can try using Sitemeter, Histats or Google Analytics. I like Histats better than Sitemeter and Google Analytics after having used these softwares. Histats is fast-loading and seldom did it interfere with any of my site’s loading time. I also find its features great. But whatever your preference is, it’s better to have one installed in your site than none at all. With a site statistics software (or widget), you’ll be able to:

  1. Know how many readers are presently in your site (online users)
  2. Know where your readers are coming from (search engines, website referrers and geolocation)
  3. Track the IP addresses of your readers which could be helpful in fighting spams
  4. Determine what pages your readers are reading/clicking
  5. Determine how long do readers stay in your site
  6. Know who’s on your site or who have been on your site
  7. Know what time you had the highest or lowest visitors
  8. Know what keywords are hot in your site

There are more that I will not be able to discuss in this article because not all online statistics softwares are the same. They vary in features, plan and method of installation. Some softwares require that you paste their code in a sidebar widget or in a template. Also, some of the features or benefits I have mentioned in the list may not be present in your traffic monitoring tool because it’s dependent on many factors like your plan (free, personal, business or premium) but that’s ok for as long as the software (or widget) serves your needs. Choose the software you are most comfortable with. Do some trial-and-error using free statistics softwares to find out what serves you best. Analysis of specific data will be discussed in my future articles.
