Is Homosexuality an Issue to You?
A few decades ago, homosexuality in the Philippines was not an accepted condition. I say condition because gays and lesbians are referred to as “third sex”. When I was growing up in the 70’s and 80’s, being suspected as gay or “bakla” was a mortal sin in the eyes of neighbors and ostracism was not far behind to follow. Ostracism and ridicule, yeah, they were always on the heels of the suspected gays and even lesbians more popularly known as “tomboy“.
The situation changed in the 90’s when gays and lesbians enjoyed a great deal of social acceptance. Gays and lesbians started to form communities here in the Philippines which were openly accepted by the changing Filipino culture. Gay shows and Miss Gay Beauty Contests started to become popular events during fiestas.
In other societies like Europe, gays and lesbians have enjoyed more public acceptance long ago even when Filipinos cannot yet accept having a gay or lesbian in the family.
In Romania, gays and lesbians have a website (gay Romania) where they even highlight some of their recent activities like Gay Fest 2008, and the title Miss Travesti is up for grabs. Well, much like our very own in the Philippines – the Miss Gay.
This goes to show that communities of gays and lesbians are growing worldwide and is not an issue to many people and cultures worldwide. how about you? Is homosexuality an issue to you?

It used to be an issue for me. Had lots of nasty experiences with lecherous gays back in college. Now it’s live and let live for me. I even have gay friends these days. Oh well, c’est la vie.

It was never an issue for me. I am comfortable around them. My best buddies in high school and college were gay and it’s fun to be around them. I have a really close friend who only admitted to being gay after knowing him for 4 years but it does not change I think. I respect him no matter what.

Amor,
Fren, likewise. They’re most of the time fun because they are really “gay” or happy people.
