Brazilian Sugar Production is Increasing Over the Years

From a health perspective, sugar is one the best sources of energy. This is what keeps me alive and strong as a blogger, writer, math professor, researcher and programmer. I couldn’t have made it through the grueling 13 years of my career as a jack-of-all-trade without coffee and sugar.

Also, Cane Sugar is such a wonderful plant. It has so many uses. Basically, it is the primary source of sugar we use in our coffee, milk cakes, breads and many other products. In other countries, the lowly cane sugar is being tapped as a source of energy. Details of this will be discussed in future posts.

On the other hand, here in the Philippines, the production of sugar is dominated by Hacienda Luisita, a business primarily owned by Former President Cory Aquino’s family. Recent years, however, show the production of sugar slow down due to conflicts of interests between farmers and landlords or “hacienderos“.

The scenario is different in Brazil. In fact, Brazil is the world leader of the sugar industry, and in 2007 – 2008 is expected to produce over 32 million tonnes of sugar. Brazil and India have been neck in neck in recent years, with India’s sugar production increasing rapidly, however for the 2007 – 2008 period Brazil is expected to retain its title as the highest sugar producing nation in the world as India’s projected output dips to 26 million tonnes, 6 million tonnes behind Brazil.

If the Philippine government has the political will to implement changes in its food production policies, I’m pretty sure the Philippines can make it big in the international sugar market. However, the conversion of agricultural lands to commercial lots like subdivisions is the biggest hindrance and this should be the first concern to be addressed before all our lands become landfills and commercial spaces.
