American Idol 2008 Top 5 and Neil Diamond
The American Idol 2008 Top 5 were mentored by Neil Diamond tonight (April 30 in the Philippines, April 29 in the US). The American Idol 2008 changed format as the Top 5 finalists sang 2 songs each.
For some info on the mentor, the legendary Neil Diamond is one of pop music’s most enduring and succesful singer-songwriters. Diamond scored a number of hits in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. From the 1960s to the 1980s, Diamond was a successful pop music performer, scoring a number of hits worldwide. As critic William Ruhlmann writes, “As of 2001, he claimed worldwide record sales of 115 million copies, and as of 2002 he was ranked third, behind only Elton John and Barbra Streisand, on the list of the most successful adult contemporary artists in the history of the Billboard chart.” As of May 2005 he had sold 120 million records worldwide, including 48 million records in the U.S. Though his record sales declined somewhat after the 1980s, Diamond continues to tour successfully, and maintains a very loyal following. Diamond’s songs have been recorded by a vast array of performers from many different musical genres.
Diamond was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1984, and then in 2000 was given Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award.
For my take on tonight’s performance, I would go for David Cook’s singing prowess. David Cook’s voice is truly powerful and we love both of his songs.
Here is David Cook’s Youtube video performance singing “All I Need is You”.

Joy,
I’m also becoming a David Cook fan. Neil Diamond was also very good in his performance in American American Idol. As to David Cook, Paula Abdul admitted publicly that she’s also a David Cook fan.

I didn’t even watch last night’s episode because Neil Diamond didn’t seem like the most exciting array of songs. Maybe I’m too young, but it just didn’t grab my attention.
I really wish they’d drop the whole “only one artist per episode” thing. The Beatles episode was understandable because they’re legendary and have plenty of great songs, but this is just ruining it.

JBourne,
You got a good point there. The American Idol 2008 format should not be limited to a single artist as mentor in a single episode.
