My Personal Take on the New Alexa Ranking System

A few days ago, Alexa announced that their ranking system has taken a new form.  That is, the new rankings should better reflect the interests and surfing habits of the broader population of web users, so they claimed, adding that they will now measure traffic from browsers without the Alexa toolbar installed.  This is in fact something new.

However, for this site, the new Alexa rank wasn’t so favorable.  I am not complaining though.  It’s just a part of blogging.  An acceptable system.  An acceptable loss, so to speak.  Also, why should I complain if my other blogs have benefited from this new system? :-)

However, just like the old Alexa ranking system, the formula isn’t quite clear yet.  I am not really sure what changes exactly have been made to the formula of Alexa but I can still see bias in the new system just like the old one.  Some low-traffic sites had huge increases in rank while some high-traffic sites got de-ranked. For a blogger who lives by traffictizing his site, a lowered Alexa ranking is not really a good news.

I have some friends who have actually complained about the new system.  As for me, let us give Alexa some time to prove whether the new system can better measure our website traffic or not.  Maybe after a few months, let us give our thoughts on the new system after observing its performance in measuring traffic and how accurate can it do its job.

  5. i used to disregard the alexa rank until that time i knew the ranks of all my blogs. They’re all awful. But I wonder why my latest blog, despite being down for three weeks, has a better rank than the others.

Yeah, that’s exactly my point why I said to Ambo that I like the old ranking system better. The bias in the new system became bigger in my view.

  6. Ambo,

Personally I like the old Alexa ranking system better also. The new one is even more questionable than the old system.

  7. I don’t like any of them. Sa google, the higher the number, the better. Sa Alexa, the lower the number, the better.

Come to think of it hindi naman tlga accurate ang Alexa since time immemorial. Computer experts would agree to that dahil up to now napapansin ko nga na may mga high-trafficc sites na di tumataas ang alexa ranks.

  8. From what I had observed, they are focusing on traffic from search engines rather than social sites, like Entrecard. That’s why some bloggers experience a drop in their ranking.

    Haney,

I’m not really sure of that because even sites with high traffic from search engines experienced huge drops in their Alexa ranks. In any case, let us just try to enjoy what we do in blogging. Sometimes becoming too conscious with these figures is not healthy.

  9. I think many advertisers still look into Alexa when determining an advertising potential within a site. So I guess it’s considerable to get a decent Alexa Rank.
With their recent update, I sure hope that it’ll be more accurate then it was.

I wonder if the update didn’t go as well as planned, what would it become? Does alexa still looked up as a measurement?

    Louis,

You’re right advertisers still look into a site’s alexa rank up to now. the only problem is its accuracy to really measure traffic. up to now it hasn’t really been tested. at PPP, the izearank was devised to measure the traffic of posties’ sites. the algorithm is different and advertisers look into this ranking system more now and are more dependent on this site than the alexa.

  10. I heared the announcement that alexa has changed its ranking algorithm. I am little happy with this change because my website got little improvment. see new alexa ranking for http://www.alexa.com/data/details/main?url=www.fortunehotels.in Fortune Park Hotels Ltd.
