Incidence of Heatstroke May Rise in Very Hot Weather

Incidence of heatstroke in the Philippines this summer could increase. This summer period is definitely one of the hottest as PAGASA predicted that the temperature will rise to 37 degrees celsius or higher. With health in mind, this blogger wishes to educate some readers regarding heatstroke, which is not as popular as any stroke that we know.

Heatstroke is the most severe form of heat-related illnesses and is defined as a body temperature higher than 41.1°C (106°F) with accompanying physical and neurological symptoms. Heat stroke is a true medical emergency that can be fatal if not properly and promptly treated.

But tea, coffee, soda and alcohol should be avoided, some experts said, because they can further increase body temperature.

If you are concerned about your health this summer, consider the following signs and symptoms of heatstroke:

  1. Fainting, which may be the first sign in older adults
  2. Rapid heartbeat
  3. Rapid and shallow breathing
  4. Elevated or lowered blood pressure
  5. Cessation of sweating
  6. Irritability, confusion or unconsciousness
  7. Feeling dizzy or lightheaded
  8. Headache
  9. Nausea

If you suspect heatstroke, follow these simple tips:

  1. Move the person out of the sun and into a shady or air-conditioned space.
  2. Dial 911 or call for emergency medical assistance.  In  some areas here in the Philippines,  you can call 119  using your landline telephone or cellphone. Check local emergency numbers when you are on vacation.
  3. Cool the person by covering him or her with damp sheets or by spraying with cool water. Direct air onto the person with a fan or newspaper.
  4. Have the person drink cool water, if he or she is able to lower her body temperature.
