What is Mesothelioma?

For a nursing researcher like me, the topic of cancer is always an interesting one. Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that is less popular than other cancer types and has stirred debates among health practitioners because the disease will only appear after 20-50 years of exposure to asbestos.

According to wikipedia.org,

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that is almost always caused by previous exposure to asbestos. In this disease, malignant cells develop in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers most of the body’s internal organs. Its most common site is the pleura (outer lining of the lungs and chest cavity), but it may also occur in the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity) or the pericardium (a sac that surrounds the heart).

Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles, or have been exposed to asbestos dust and fibre in other ways, such as by washing the clothes of a family member who worked with asbestos, or by home renovation using asbestos cement products. Unlike lung cancer, there is no association between mesothelioma and smoking.

Treatment of mesothelioma could be difficult, time-consuming and frustrating to patients and family members. Treatments include: surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and Heated Intraoperative Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy. These mesothelioma treatment options are very expensive (needless to say).

However, to defray expenses on treatments, mesothelioma patients hire mesothelioma lawyers to claim money from the companies they work (or used to worked) for. Expenses are high and companies subjecting their employees to asbestos are obligated to pay for the bills of their employees as part of their hazard pay even if they are no longer connected with them. The legal suit can be very lengthy and without a good lawyer, mesothelioma cases may not prosper.

So if you know someone with this type of disease, you should consult the services of a good mesothelioma lawyer as soon as possible because pursuing the case and convincing a jury that doing a particular job for a particular company is not an easy task.
