Who Knows the Ten Commandments of God by Heart?
Man has always been keen on laws, especially written ones. In the Philippines, there is an estimated 60,000 written laws (as far as I can recall) and probably more as of this writing. But are we simply confined with laws written by men? In the old days where chaos, war and hunger punished many peoples, a measure to install peace and order was made – the Ten Commandments of God.
According to Wikipedia The Ten Commandments, or Decalogue, are a list of religious and moral imperatives that according to Judeo-Christian tradition, were written by God and given to Moses on the mountain referred to as “Mount Sinai” (Exodus 19:23) or “Mount Horeb” (Deuteronomy 5:2) in the form of two stone tablets. They feature prominently in Judaism and Christianity.

But how well do we really know the Ten Commandments? Do we even know its existence and how they aim to keep us good? Since it’s Easter Sunday and we’re celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ, maybe we should contemplate if by heart we’re knowledgeable of the 10 basic laws in life, not the thousands of questionable laws written by men, that will help us live better and become better men.

I only know two:
Matthew 22:36-40 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ “This is the great and foremost commandment. “The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ “On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”

Though there may be few Jewish or Christian people who know the ten commandments by heart, I am sure that most of them know the term Ten Commandments and also know that God gave these ten commandments to Moses on Mount Sinai. I also think that most people in the world, even the hundreds of millions of people who have never heard of God or Jesus Christ or the Bible or Christianity, know that people must not make the lives of their parents miserable or kill or commit adultery or steal or lie in court or desire to rob fellow humans of their homes or their spouses.
The problem with the ten commandments is not that many people do not know them or do do not know them by heart. The main problem is understanding what God really means with His ten commandments.
Let me give some examples:
Does the commandment: HONOUR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER also apply to parents who commit crimes against their children (cause them mental or physical harm)?
Does the commandment YOU SHALL NOT MURDER also apply to wars? Did it apply to the American soldiers who liberated Europe after the second world war? The American soldiers in the Vietnam war? The Vietnamese soldiers in the Vietnam war? The American soldiers in Iraq? The people behind the extrajudicial killings in the Philippines? The NPA rebels in the Philippines?
Does the commandment YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY forbid all divorces of all people? Does it forbid a divorce for a wife who is daily maltreated and/or exploited by an evil husband?
Does the commandment YOU SHALL NOT STEAL apply to the hundreds of thousands of parents in the Philippines who have not enough money to buy enough food for their children? Must they let their children starve? What if parents cannot buy necessary medicines for their children? And they must choose between letting their children die or steal money from rich people who live a few streets or blocks away?
The writer of this comment is a Dutchman who is married to a Philipina. We live in Holland, but often visit the Philippines.
I was a teacher of English and religion at a Dutch high school before I retired. After retiring I wrote a website that sums up all I know about the Christian faith.
