What is Good Friday to Filipino Catholics?

Good Friday to most Catholics is a time to be with family, penitence, silence and vacation. The Philippines, being largely Catholic, is hugely affected by “Semana Santa” or Holy Week Do’s and Don’t. These are norms that have been laid down from generation to generation.

In my case, the following were observed during this day (Good Friday) within my family circle:

1) Observe silence during this day. No turning on of radios, TV’s and all sound-producing equipment that will disrupt the observance of this day. Radios have only been opened during the rendition of “Pasion”.

2) Don’t eat meat. Only fish, vegetables and fruits are allowed to be eaten during Good Friday.

3) Stay at home. No one is allowed to go out of the house the whole day.

4) Join the parade of the Station of the Cross when you are available. This is the parade we enjoy every year since we get the chance to see old friends who are on vacation during this parade.

Some scenes of the Holy Week in the Philippines are as follows:

  1. That first picture, was the man got nailed for real? Where is that? I haven’t such scene in Davao. Pero yung Parade ang common. Ganun din sa min, kapag naka-on ang radio sa Good Friday, nagagalit si Lola.

    Mhy,

The crucifixion as a form of penitence is common in Pampanga. Mga Kapampangans na tulad ko (dahil Kapampangan ang tatay) ang nagpasimula ng ganyan. It’s their yearly devotion. The nailing of the palms and feet are real. No camera trick whatsoever. You’ll be amazed and maybe stunned if you see a live performance of this practice.

Fren, I don’t think I can stand watching it. Yung movie nga lang, pinipikit ko ang mga mata ko dahil parang ako ang nasasaktan.

You know, nung first year ko dito at nag-aral ng Swedish, may ipinakitang pics from newspaper ang teacher kong Swede about that.
