Pacquiao vs Marquez 2: Unfinished Business Ended in a Split Decision
A few minutes ago at this hour and day (March 16, 2008), the Pacquiao-Marquez 2 ended in a draw where Manny Pacquiao emerged as a winner on judges’ scorecards. Manny Pacquiao is the new WBC Superfeatherweight champion. This is Manny Pacquiao‘s third division world championship title. His win over Juan Manuel Marquez affirmed his title “Mexican Destroyer” after beating Juan Manuel Marquez and other Mexican boxing greats.
The scores were 115-112, 112-115, 114-113 (a split decision) in favor of Manny Pacquiao making him the new WBC Superfeatherweight Champion of the world. He was favored by the judges based primarily on aggressiveness and gut. Manny Pacquaio‘s best moment was in Round 3 when he knocked down Juan Manuel Marquez leaving the latter dizzy after the round even forgetting where his right corner was.
However, rounds 5-8 saw Juan Manuel Marquez dominating the fight despite suffering from an injury over his right eye in one of those rounds. Manny Pacquiao showed some signs of hesitation to become aggressive all throughout the fight because of Juan Manuel Marquez‘s ability to parry his shots and counter-punch with equally heavy hands. he suffered a deep cut over his right eye as well, making the fight even. Rounds 9-11 were Manny Pacquiao‘s round for showing a confidence build-up in those rounds, landing more shots than Marquez. The Mexican fighter was not an easy fighter to beat though. He kept charging and showing some really terrific boxing skills despite losing the whole match. After the fight, he said he thought he won the battle with Pacquiao. He was clearly disappointed because Manny Pacquiao did not show any interest (during the interview with Pacquiao on the ring) in giving him a rematch.
Overall, the win of Manny Pacquiao against Juan Manuel Marquez is not as dominating as his previous fights like those with Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales. I’ve seen a better Manny Pacquiao in the past and his team’s plan to move up to the 135-lb weight division is a wise one. Juan Manuel Marquez might as well run after him in that division by moving up also. Their present weight class is 130 pounds.
At any rate, congratulations to Manny Pacquaio and the whole Filipino nation worldwide. We have another world champion!!!
Here’s a photo of the Knockdown by Pacquiao in Round 3:
And a picture of Marquez giving Pacquiao a hard uppercut on the face:
After this match, I’m almost certain that there will be a Pacquiao vs. Marquez 3.

Pacquiao’s aggresiveness in the later rounds sealed the win for him although Marquez performed better than expected. Sabi nga ni Manny sa interview ay tsamba or sinuwerte lang daw siya. I think he should give Marquez a rematch!

A win is a win. So a player’s gotta take it. The judges are the rightful men to say who wins and who loses. If they say Manny won, then it’s manny. When manny faced marquez the first time, he knocked marquez thrice on one round only, and the judges ruled it a draw. So, it was a draw, manny and the rest of the boxing audience took it because the judges say so.

I don’t like the counter attack of marquez in boxing because he is like a coward always stepping backward and stolen shots. He
cannot fight like erik morales of boxing toe to toe with pacquiao that is most exciting in boxing. His always in defense instead of
boxing strong toe to toe. I think morales is a better boxer than him and same with pacquiao. His like a coward.

If Pacquiao had not decked Marquez but won the third round anyway, it would’ve been a split draw just like the outcome in their first fight. If Marquez won the third round, he would’ve won by majority decision.
Don’t forget that Pacquiao should’ve won the first meeting by a split decision four years ago. Burt Clements, the judge who had it a draw, admitted he made a mistake in shortchanging Pacquiao by a point in the first round when Marquez went down thrice but under boxing rules, the scorecard couldn’t be altered after the fact.
So if you really think about it, Pacquiao has effectively beaten Marquez twice.
The problem with some Filipino fans is they’ve been spoiled by Pacquiao and expect nothing less than a spectacular knockout in each of his fights.
Marquez is a tough opponent and because of his style, will always be difficult for Pacquiao to handle. Pacquiao could’ve done more things to win convincingly last Saturday – he could’ve used the right hand more, he could’ve hit and spun like he did in the second and third Erik Morales fights, he could’ve cut the ring off with more authority on Marquez to close the distance between them, he could’ve jabbed more, he could’ve attacked the body more consistently, he could’ve used more lateral movement instead of insisting on coming forward linearly.
There are so many other “could’ves” to cite but the fact is two of the three judges scored it for Pacquiao and he won, fair and square. Pacquiao earned the victory because he fought with the bigger heart, came back strong in the late rounds and every Filipino should be proud of his achievement in becoming the first Asian to win three world titles in different divisions. He bled for every one of his countrymen, he took Marquez’ hardest shots without backing down. You couldn’t ask anything more from a hero

I totally agree. Pacquiao may not have dominated the fight for having been punched hard many times by Marquez but the fact that he was judged as winner by 2 out of 3 judges is enough proof that his win was legitimate.

Dale…I Do agree with you 100%. I just hate some of our countrymen who thinks Manny didnt do good and that he should have lost the fight. He didnt perform like his previous fights but the fact of the matter is that he KO’d Marquez on the 3rd round and Marquez never knocked out Manny even on their 1st encounter.
