March is Fire Prevention Month in the Philippines

March is Fire Prevention Month in the Philippines. It is one event that has affected the lives of many Filipinos since incidence of fire is high especially in dense urban areas like Manila. Fire Prevention Month reminds us all that though the discovery of fire was one of man’s earliest technological discoveries, it has since claimed countless lives, destroyed properties and dilapidated spirits.

Here in Laoag City, about a month ago, a portion of the city commercial district was burned to the ground. The area consumed by fire included 4 or 5 business establishments and damages reached millions of pesos. This scenario is not new in Manila. News on TV alone proves that fire accidents are always devastating. Whatever is the cause of fire (i.e., faulty wiring system, gas leak, accidental burning, bombing, etc.), means to prevent fire will always come in handy especially in homes and business establishments. Who can ever forget the incidence in Glorietta Mall and 9/11 bombing in New York?

As such, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) provided the following home and life-saving tips to everyone:

  • Put phone numbers of your nearest fire department near your phone.
  • Eliminate fire hazards through good housekeeping: dispose waste paper, rubbish and other flammable materials regularly.
  • Keep matches out of children’s reach.
  • Oil or gas lamps and candles should be placed away from curtains. Do not light them near windows, fans or where children or pets may topple them. Put out the flame before going to bed.
  • Do not keep flammable materials like gasoline, alcohol and paint inside the house.
  • Regularly check your electrical installations, and have all frayed wirings and electrical fixtures changed or repaired by a licensed electrician.
  • Do not overload electrical circuits by putting additional lights and appliances.
  • Blown fuses should not be replaced with coins, wires or any other metal.
  • Never leave a lighted cigarette/cigar/pipe unattended. This may fall on flammable materials.
  • Keep a first-aid kit handy.

I hope these tips will help you in the long run. Remember, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
