Bb. Pilipinas 2008 Ms. World Janina San Miguel: Deserving or Controversial Win?
Oh, my goodness Janina San Miguel, I checked my emails an hour ago and found some very interesting queries about the recently-concluded Bb. Pilipinas 2008 beauty pageant. This is in relation to my previous articles about the contest where Janina San Miguel won one of the highest awards – the Bb. Pilipinas 2008-Ms. World title. Much to my surprise, the win by Janina San Miguel of the title Ms. World was seen by many as controversial (based on email contents). This in turn tarnished the reputation of the Bb. Pilipinas franchise as it is bombarded as of late with negative feedbacks. This is partly because of Janina San Miguel, whether we admit it or not.
This then begs the question if Janina San Miguel is deserving or not to represent our country in the Ms. World beauty pageant on foreign territory. If Janina San Miguel is perceived by many as undeserving of the Ms. World crown, then what does that make the body governing the pageant?
I don’t know about you but others have said their piece and see this poor 17-year-old lass as just a pretty face on a one-way street.

In fairness, she’s beautiful. But unlike her predecessors in the ranks of Ruffa Gutierrez and others, she just lacks the wit to please the judges of an international competition as prestigious as the Ms. World 2008. Well, that’s just me. I just hope she improves a great deal before the day of the competition comes.
UPDATE: Shanker Bakshi, a blogger-friend from India requested me to upload this video for non-Filipinos like him to understand the issue. Well, I think he has a point there. Foreigners who were not able to watch the Bb. Pilipinas Grand Coronation Night could have a better insight if they can watch the youtube video of Janina San Miguel. So here it is.

i think she deserves to win. whether we like it or not, she will represent our country in the miss world. like i’ve said sa recent post ko, bakit di sia magdala ng interpreter nya sa contest like venezuela, china and japan? yang mga yan e nananalo nga e ni hindi nga marunong talaga sa english, si janina pa e practice lang kelangan ng batang yan. maryosep pati ako napapasagot dito ahahahaha.

Bakit she don’t deserve ang sentence mo? At teka, di naman ito na-po-pose agad. Dapat in-edit mo muna yan dahil kung ang video ni Janina ay napapanood ng ibang tao, nababasa naman ng iba ang comment mo. Dapat ang sentence mo ay “She doesn’t deserve” dahil ang subject mo ay singular. Dapat siguro mag-review ka rin ng basic English grammar. Yung kay Janina,medyo katanggap-tanggap pa kasi orally yun, kapag sinabi mo na, hindi mo na iyon ma-i-edit pa. Mas nakakahiya ang comment mo. ambo i get your point. i guess a lot of us do. the point is, it is not just about the language it is about the CONTENT of the answer. even if she brings 50 smart and good interpreters in the miss world pageant she is still going to mess up if she does not teach herself how to LISTEN TO THE QUESTION POSED and be ready to answer the question. she was not even ready at all!if she needs practice she should have not gone to the BB. Pilipinas pageant in the first place. she should have waited until she was fully prepared not just physically but INTELLECTUALLY!look at Ms. Botswana (during Miriam Quiambao’s reign)she is not as pretty as JANINA but she won ms. universe. why????? BECAUSE SHE USED HER BRAINS!

I pretty agree with Ambo. Why don’t we give that girl a chance? She’s not perfect and nobody’s perfect. If you were in her shoes what will you do? We know Filipino’s are far better than other Asian countries in speaking English, but what more the other candidates in Ms. World who can’t really comprehend and speak English?
Janina may be poor in English, pero dapat bang ipagyabang mo kung marunong ka sa English at ang kapatid mo dapat mong pagtawanan kung bobo? Di ba dapat suportahan pa nga natin. Turuan natin at di yung akala mo kung sino ka na para mang alipusta ng iba. We all deserve a second chance and so with Janina. You get what i mean? huh

I certainly agree with your sentiments when it comes to supporting her in her quest to reach the top. well, eventually that’s all we can do…
pare-pareho lang tayong biktima ng sitwasyon, Si janinana nasabak sa laban na hindi niya pinaghandaan. At tayo, hindi naihanda ang sarili sa pagtanggap sa katotohanan.
Yun nga lang, sa aking palagay… it’s not janina we should ridicule but the management of the pageant.
In the 1st place, why eliminate the beauty queens for the very obvious reason…BEAUTY. They should have picked someone with something exceptionally standing out.
Obviously they are all beautiful. But unique qualities will make them winners… well, supposedly.
F*CK the Bb. Pilipinas management.

joyjoy para mo namang sinabi na kahit mali ang sagot nya it’s ok dahil sinusuportahan mo ang pagiging-pilipini nya… but how about the other girls who answered their questions better than her, i think that they deserve the title a lot more. being a representative of our country means being a representation of our people, therefore its embarassing to see that someone who might actually represent us internationally cannot even answer a simple question. its also embarassing to hear that other countries are aware that the judges’ decision to crown her. kaninang umaga (canda)they played the clip of her interview on the radio and they were making fun of her, it gives the impression that we are not very bright. I support my country and its people, but what i cannot stand is the idea of someone making a mistake and still being rewarded for it. kung pilipino ka na marunong mag-english good for you at dapat di mo sila tinitira, janina is a candidate to represent our country so its natural that people have high expectations of her, if she cant handle the questions then she doesnt deserve the title.

i dont think that janina deserves the title at all. one of the biggest part of the Bb pilipinas is to show how beautiful and intelliget philippine beauties are and obviously she really didn’t justify that at all. nakakahiya, you could hear the someone telling her na-magtagalog sya tapos nag-english pa rin sya, that just shows her maturity level in the competition. she joined the competition young kaya dapat di nya gamitin na excuse na 17 yrs old lang sya. she screwed up the answer and being on spotlight, her nerves got the best of her. that just shows that for some odd reason, beauty weigh more that brains in Bs pilipinas for the first time.

there’s nothing wrong if grammar is not at all her forte.. but shouldn’t she at least UNDERSTAND the question?!!?? i understand she’s pretty nervous and all (*which i think is also not a good enough reason. IT’S a COMPETITION! if you had the guts to audition, back it up with confidence and not crack at the slightest pressure!) if t’was me on stage, i would have pretended to have lost consciousness. but i dont really see the justice in blaming her for winning the title, it was all the judges’ fault!

Fine her grammar is bad and the solution to that is that she could have a translator yadda, yadda, yadda but the fact of the matter is she couldn’t even answer the question! She fumbled on stage and laughed like an idiot, said. “Homyguud” and then proceeded to give excuses and talk about herself and ultimately did not answer the question. Not only does she lack the brains but the poise and elegance of a Beauty Queen. She does not know how to handle herself on stage and I don’t think I’ve seen anything so cringe-worthy in all of pageant history. She makes Miss South Carolina look like a member of MENSA! Spectacular. As a Filipino, I am utterly embarassed because this is what is going to the Ms. World beauty pageant to represent us.

What can you expect from dumb judges like Marian Rivera and Dennis Trillo? Dumb judges pick dumb winners. Perhaps, they did not know “They was….” is a very obvious grammatical error. Buti pa my 7 year old nephew knows when to use “was” vs. “were”.

everyone is entitled to judge her because she chose to place herself in the limelight. joining pageants automatically gives people license to either approve, criticize or give their two-cents worth. no one is saying that she has to be perfect or anyone is, for that matter.. but at least she should have prepared herself (intellectually) before she took on something as huge as that.. she would be representing us, think of that.. but at the end of the day, it’s not her fault.. it’s the judges’ coz they’ve decided poorly..

binibining pilipinas was a pageant for mediocre candidates. particularly the judges. whats the connection of a celebrity judges and business tycoon judges sa beauty pageant? sana they get judges na forte ung pageant, it’s a big shame for our country na xia mag represent sa miss world. we’re not just corrupt country added to that ay mga boba pa tayo. kc ung mga judges ay mga matatanda na. the next big thing for binibining pilipinas. godbless nlang sa kanya. I don’t have high regards for beauty pageants, but from what I know regarding past winners, they have to have Beauty + Brains, which is obviously not the case with this one.
I think she just made it to the Top Ten Worst Beauty pageant interviews EVER — and the worst part is…she won!

we watched the pageant on tv last saturday and we were very disappointed with the results. i think she do not deserve to be bb.pilipinas world. she doesn’t even know how to pronounce “family” correctly. “my (P)amily” “they was there” duh! even a grade one student know simple subject-verb agreement. plus, being a mass communication major, she must know the right pronounciation of words. she kept apologizing about her nervouseness but she can’t do the same thing in the ms. world pageant. if she can’t carry herself well in front of the Filipino audience, then I think it would be so hard for her to compete in the ms. world pageant.

I can’t imagine that an answer like that will bring her fame. It was excruciating a it is then voila she won. I feel humiliated because she will be representing the country. Our country! There was the “my family”, “there was the one”, “my family is the most important persons”. It was humiliating to the extent of comedic. The thing is she even explained with the ETO that it is her first time plus she’s only 17 years old. As far as I know, if we commit mistakes especially on stage, no explanation will make it right. You screwed the whole thing, that’s about it! I mean Miriam Quiambao made a boo boo but there was no explaining needed, she just stood up (with glamour). This one is just a plain 17 years old, dumb witted girl and yes with a face and bod. Anyways, I guess for some, those make up for everything.

Pag pagsagot ng tama at pag Ingles at natututunan at napag aaralan. Ang angking ganda ng isang tao ay bibihira lang. Kung nagkataon man na hindi siya pinalad sa Q & A ay hindi basehan para sabihin na siya ay bobo. Marami pang ibang pagkakataon para siya ay matoto. Dapat intindihin na lang na siya ay isang tao lamang. Suporthan siya para sa ikauunlad ng ating bayan. Huwag siyang pintasan, dapat turuan.

Critisize her in the right way by allowing her to learn from her mistake. Learn english and practice before the pageant and be ready for every unexpected moments that will come during the contents.
Don’t let her down at this time, let us support her and show to her that we filipinos are truly one and we are not against each other.
Stop blaming her, instead inspire her to practice and to her best in the coming Ms. World.

Hello, I am a American and my Philippines girlfriend just told me about the winner so I came online to see. All i can say is wow! This girl does not even look filipino. She is more white than be, and she had a nose job to look white. I’m sorry but I want to see a brown skin beauty with the flat nose. I think they are the most beautiful. I understand why the girls want to whiten themselves and have nose jobs to look more westerner. The shouldn’t..they are beautiful the way they are, and a brown skin filipino will always turn the girls and guys heads here in the USA. Congratulations to the girl for winning..but seems like the event was fixed.

i admit.. i laughed so hard when i watched the video of her q&a portion but we cannot deny the fact that her physical attributes stood out the most during the pageant, that’s why she got the best in swimsuit and long gown award.
She is not bobo.. she has to train to get better in inteviews.. Remember that a brain gets wiser with enough learning but a beautiful face, body, and height cannot be improved with anything unnless you’ll undergo a surgery.. Hello people! In pageants, they’ll put you on top 5 not because you’re a cumlaude graduate but because of your body and beauty which are the keys to make money for their charity works. Be realistic people.. She deserves to win.. Don’t judge her yet.. Nowadays, we have been sending brains for the pageants but never received anything and besides, she joined bb. pilipinas to show her beauty and not for humilation that her own countrymen gave her.

1. Train her in English non-stop until the Miss World Pageant
2. Rebuild her self-confidence (i think news of all this bashing has reached her, and she needs more guts on-stage!)
3. Ok, we get it, Bb Pilipinas = so much FAIL (so get better judges next time!!)
4. Try and avoid getting an interpreter (2nd language of Pinas is English, it WILL be really akward if we suddenly use one)

Tandaanan naman natin na mayroon na siyang magandang katawan, ang pananalita nalang ang kulang, maghusga kapag natapos na ang Miss World. (basta’t mag-aaral siya ng MABUTI at hindi petiks)

Kitang kita sa thread na ito kung gaano tayo ka self-righteous, at kung pano tayo mang-apak at mang-hamak ng mga taong “less fortunate”. Yes, hindi talaga worthy si Janina to represent our country, but do we have to throw her mean words like “bobo” and “tanga”? Isn’t the line “she’s not fit to represent us” enough? You people may have an “A” grade in English, but how about in Values?

She really didn’t answer the question. It could mean of either of three things: she didn’t understand it, she did understand it but was not able to articulate herself very well, or both.
If I were in her shoes and all the people laughed at me, I’m sure I would blush and lose my focus. The good things about her are her focus, her composure (albeit she was laughed at), her poise, her confidence (i.e. “No, I don’t feel any pressure right now.”), and the fact that she continued what she started; that is, she continued speaking in English. Doing so lessened the embarrassment. I mean, if she shifted languages in the middle of her answer, she would’ve lost. It really was a thumbs-up for me that she carried on with English, even though the lack of proficiency. She just wanted to show that she didn’t lose focus even through all the humiliation. It was sort of a redemption for her part.
The bad thing about her was quite obvious: she didn’t answer the question. But I really think that she should be given the chance. Miss South Carolina (from Miss Teen USA) redeemed herself after the pageant by answering her question right. I believe that if the question was given to her in Filipino, then she would undoubtedly answer the question very well. These beauty pageant contestants all know beauty pageant answers to beauty pageant questions. They all know that their answers should be for the benefit (of either the people or the environment); contestants would not answer something that would harm anything or anyone. And the judges know that. It really boils down to how they answer the question. And for me, she had the confidence and the shamelessness.
She made herself a living proof to the maxim “Laugh and the whole world laughs with you.” If the whole world laughs AT you, then maybe you should laugh with them, to relieve yourself from all the pressure, the stress and the humiliation.
My advice for her is: to ask for an interpreter in Miss World (I don’t give a damn to people saying that English is the second language, whoever declared that?). I guess a seven-month training would not be enough for her to answer grammatically correct (but she really should work on that) in English. It would really help her answer the question correctly and more wittingly.
I think that the judges have reasons for choosing her over the others. I’m sure they are not dumb enough to not see her grammatical errors and what not. They know for a fact that her winning entitles her to represent the country in Miss World. And I’m sure their decisions have well-founded explanations.
