Binibining Pilipinas 2008 Grand Coronation Night Winners
I was already asleep last night and I didn’t intend to write about the Bb. Pilipinas 2008 Grand Coronation Night event. However, my wife insisted that I watch the Philippines’ most prestigious beauty pageant. Goodness, beauty contest is not my thing. In fact I haven’t seen a lot of beauty contests even when I was younger. But hey, this is the Bb. Pilipinas and it’s not just a simple beauty contest held during barangay fiestas.
So I watched the pageant. Charlene Gonzales-Muhlach and Precious Lara Quigaman (former beauty queens and Bb. Pilipinas titleholders) hosted the show. Charlene Gonzales still looks hot and so is the younger Precious Lara. Paolo Bediones also acted as a co-host.
I was able to start watching the pageant when Charlene Gonzales was re-announcing the candidates in their swimwear. I’ve noticed the candidates were the Top 10 semi-finalists of the whole competition and maybe my timing was just impeccable.
The winners of the Bb. Pilipinas 2008 Beauty Pageant are the following:
Bb. Pilipinas-International – Patricia Fernandez
Bb. Pilipinas-World – Janina San Miguel
Bb. Pilipinas-Universe – Jennifer Barrientos
I’m not really sure if I got the spelling of their names right. If I got them wrong, then my apologies.

Whahhhhhhhhh bakit nagkaganun ang final winner sa Bb. Pilipinas?
The winners were as surprised as the crowd and perhaps everyone who watched the event….
question: was no. 15 the one who answered about family?
No. 7 deserved it so does the one who got sick even if she had to pause for a long while….
There were only 2 or 3 sensible responses…the rest were ohhhhh crap….even if they are nervous, they could have at least replied a simple yet convincing response.
just a thought…wala ba tlagang top 5 with a final ONE question? or to prevent more humiliating responses from the finalists?

All I can say is– NYAHAHAHA!! Me and my friends were really shocked about the decision. Ni hndi nga cia dapat manalo kahit pang-MISS BARANGAY!! hehe.. Im not gonna be surprised kung bigla magpull out ang mga clients ng mga call center dito sa Pilipinas.

If she had a poor foundation on this, then it ends up with

Anyway, I think that the real mess here is the way winners

School has nothing to do with her inability to deliver a correct English.
Thus, its her fault that she did not prepare to the possibility of questions. Or she should have a review on her English 101 before she stands up on the stage and face millions of viewers. Remember that school is not spoon feeding, still its a student who dictates its intelligence.

i think hindi naman pertinent kung quiz bee or hindi and sinalihan niya. sa isang pageant, napaka important na smart/inteliigent ang babae. dapat talaga may balance between these two traits. kaya she is a big disappointment…a big no-no, lalo na’t sa miss world siya isasali. kasi basic english grammar lang naman yun eh, tapos hindi pa niya magawa ng tama. buti sana kung ubod ng hirap yung tanong, maiiintindihan mo pa.

the question was so very simple, even a grade 1 student can answer it but i dunno how she did some magic spell that the juddges were deaf and it was pretty obvious that she didn’t have any confidence…duhhh..There were some candidates who were deserving her title.. I would like to give an advice that before she will represent for the Ms.World 2008, she should review her english and built up a strong foundation of her confidence..she should know that it’s not only the country she represents for will be mebarrass but also herself and family that has a vital role in joining the contest..hope this will not happen again…

naku, hindi porke beauty pageant eh beauty lang importante… at lalong hindi lang sa quiz bee importante ang brains.. sa lahat ng bagay kailangan ng common sense! Okay lang kung grammar at pronunciation lang ang problema, the biggest issue there was that she wasn’t able to answer the question. She stated excuses for her inadequacies. one short sentence that is straight to the point is better than a paragraph without sense

I can’t stand her answers and the way she talks. you will see right away if a person has something in her brains …it’s just not the grammar… but the answer itself.. walang laman sagot nya defensive pa.. even a 10 year old human being with IQ can answer that question… she’s a dismay to our race… daig pa nya yung hind nagaral.. even her winning in best in swim suit and long gown is already a big QUESTION MARK…. LICAROS won last year’s event alright…coz she was smart, witty and everything…but she lacked beauty…she was just another plain-pinay…she didn’t even make it to the top 10…

well, it’s been common knowledge that this pageant is tainted with politics. Nampoocha! nagpuyat pa naman ako. Was rooting for no 8 and no 15 but during the Q&A, I would have fallen from my seat if I was sitting down. Eh di lalo na nung sinabi ung winners, halos magtumbling ako. I expected #8 to win and # 15 to finish dead last. My choices were, Universe:#8, World:#13, International:#7. Siguro kasi nakabroadcast sa GMA7 kaya 7 nanalo. Hahaha, I’m sorry, hahaha. Kung confidence and inherent “smartness” ng contestant ang aasahan, wala si #15 nyan (Siguro puwede kung magspend ng 3 months daily practice he he). Oh well, good luck to us sa Miss World!

i was there at the pageant bec of my good friend, candidate # 18… We were expecting though that candidate #8 would bag the title bec. her awards ;ast night turned to be a grandslam… We’ve laughed boisterously to candidate number 15’s answer, so you could just imagine how we all felt when the decision was just like that… Henry (sorry, i forgot her name), who was alsa 17 yrs old, had given a very smart answer..duh! a blonde moment for a non blonde lady? what happened to the final nod of Madame Araneta? she’ve nodded for the wrong lady who would compete for our country! Hello? she’ll be competing for OUR COUNTRY!!! sigh!!!!

My God!!! This batch are the worst ever in Binibining Pilipinas history… Even if u are nervous, at least they should have came up with a sensible answers. There was no tough answer asked last night compared to past pageants. I think the organizer should thoroughly screen the candidates, they became a laughing stock onstage! Number 15, gezzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, she even said she is confident, but when asked a very simple sentence, she could not even organize her thoughts. OMG!!!!! I wonder where this pageantry is heading from here. Its a shame!!!

did the judges not notice how the audience reacted when “ms. confident”, candidate #15, answered? yaikz! LUTONG MACAU ang pagkapanalo n’ya! i thought we’re choosing women with “beauty and brains”? may be we’re looking for women with “butt and brains”, right?? bwahaha!

no, tabetha did not give a sound answer. it just sounded “sound” because she delivered it fluently, however she did not define success she gave the requirements for success. and #18 shouldn’t have bothered answering the question if she would say there’s no perfect family. she should have just stopped there. most of them gave nonsense side comments!

I am not really a fond of comments thing. But the first thing I made after watching Bb. Pilipinas 2008 last night was to browse the net and see the reactions of the people for the disgusting winner – No. 15.
My gosh! When asked about what is important to her. She said – My family! Because THEY WAS…..ahhhhh I’m so sorry….Ok…I’m so sorry….Eto….my family because….ah….ahhahhahahahhahahaha…I’m so sorry because..I am only seventeen years old and I said …..that (eto ang talagang napa cartwheel ako – the way she pronounced “that” ay “dot”….LOL as in! parang may kasunod nacom as in dotcom. Sobrang grabe sya! Worst at talagang kahihiyan sya ng Pilipinas…hahahhahaha Kwawang Araneta, sa pagod at hirap ay ito pa ang napala….Nakakatawa ang mga nag pre screen at nakapasok itong babaeng ito.

Nakakagalit. kakainit ng ulo. ginagawang tanga ang mga pilipino. matatalino na ang mga manonood! lantaran na ang pamumulitika!!!! MADAME ARANETA kumilos ka naman diyan, sayang naman ang pinaghirapan mo. pa-tribute-tribute pa kayo kay pitoy moreno, masisira lang pala ang pangalan niya dahil sa palpak na judging. I could have understood it if the criteria was only limited to swimsuit and gown but much has been devoted to question and answer. So I expected that it will have a great weight in the final judging. I watched Binibini because I think that this is still relevant to the times – it gives opportunities to women to be able to show their beauty and talent and to support a cause.
Pero kung ganito ka-walang kwenta ang pageant ngayon, itigal na yan, ibigay na lang sa mga mahihirap ang pambili ng gown, may halaga pa!!!!

nyeta… dapat sa screening pa lang alam na nila yung smart sa hindi! eng eng sumagot yung isang candidate na tinanong about family… ang eng eng as in period! kakawalang gana! nilipat ko tuloy sa channel 2 yung tv… kabwiset! lecheng mga judges yan… hindi naman “maid” in the philippines ang contest na yun no pero bakit parang mga katulong sumagot yung iba! kakadiri! sana pala nanood nalang ako ng HBO kesa naman sa mga bobitang mga babae na yun! haaaaaaaaaay

no, tabetha did not give a sound answer. it just sounded “sound” because she delivered it fluently, however she did not define success she gave the requirements for success. and #18 shouldn’t have bothered answering the question if she would say there’s no perfect family. she should have just stopped there. most of them gave nonsense side comments!

IN fairness naman to #15, she’s pretty and sexy. true, ang ganda ganda talaga ng gown niya. Di natin maquequetion yun.But she is not really deserving to win the crown. Mas magaling pa ata mag english ang 3 yr old na cousin ko sa kanya eh.. Para siyang katulong kung mag english or even worse ha. I know that we should not blame her. We cannot just control ourselves, kasi hindi tama talaha eh. Lagi nalang may politics involve. Yung mga judges naman, walang mga qulaifications, hay naku!!!

san miguel doesn’t deserve the title. i hated her more when she explained that she’s only 17 years old. it’s like she’s using her age as an excuse to give a very, very horrible answer to the easiest question of the night. Poor Janina, the nation almost hates your triumphant. You don’t deserve the title. Sheila is correct you’re better to go back in elementary school for remedial class, surely you will learn and could able to speak English fluently and correctly. Please, don’t be arrogant next time if someone is asking you simply, by the time the host asked you, how do you feel tonight, you’re just only answering, “No, I’m not pressure” is that a correct answer. how dare you…. This is the biggest travesty of the Bb. Pilipinas pageant, after Jeannie Anderson said the infamous “Quiet Please!” in 2001.
Siguro nga, dapat gawing matindi ang screening ng mga contestants next year (Next year na naman? When will they ever learn?). Di lang maganda at matangkad na may plus factor sa international arena. She should exude confidence and grace under pressure in answering tough questions (with correct grammar usage).
Since malayo pa naman ang Miss World, I guess i-enroll na muna siya sa isang English-speaking school. I-polish na ang English language niya para pagsabak sa Miss World, di naman mapapahiya ang Pilipinas.
Same goes to all the winners. Madame Stella, please huwag niyo na silang i-exile sa Colombia at doon mag-train. Wala rin namang mangyayari kung doon mo sila dadalhin. Try to maximize the resources in this country.

buti na lang i did not waste any time watching the pageant. oh well, biased na kung biased, kapamilya kasi ako so i really don’t watch anything on channel 7 ^_^ pero i watched the vid on youtube, and to my dismay, why did she win? was it because of the text votes? haha nakakahiya naman. and she will represent the country? oh my, oh my! sana we could do better next year, kung meron pang bb. pilipinas na magaganap

She was picked to be the champion to represent our country, so it is now up to the pageant committee to get Janina ready for the miss world pageant. She really has the potential to bring home the crown. She already has 2 out of 3 main ingredients to pull it off. She’s beautiful and confident/gracious of character. Intelligence (or the quality to be able to express oneself) can be learned with an excellent coach guiding her. There is still enough time to accomplish this… it’s not mission impossible. Her inability to articulate in the English language is a direct product of the Phil public school system…that’s not her fault. I agree that she should have answered in Tagalog but then the question was in English…that’s why she tried her best to answer it in English (which as everyone saw was a disaster.) Unlike other contestants who had private school education (but still failed miserably to impress me), Janina had to make the best of what her family can afford, and that is public school. Yes, she was a freshman mass comm. student at UE for a semester because she knows she has to improve her communication skills. Maybe more details of her background is needed by the public for them to be able to come up with a fair assesment of her. Until then, all the negative write-ups she’s been getting are all out-of-line and unfair. I just hope people will know more about her and give her their support, and that she hasn’t lost her confidence because of all the negative publicity. GO Janina… make us proud… prove to us that you deserve to represent the Philippines.

Don’t blame public schools for inability to speak English. It’s the person’s own upbringing. If she can’t express herself in English, why not answer in a language that she can confidently deliver? It’s just a matter of how you carry yourself in a difficult situation. If you’re easily rattled, you don’t deserve to win the crown.

…but the point is, the pageant is supposedly a pageant of women who are not only beautiful but also “INTELLIGENT”. how can the pageant be obviously dependable if two its fundamental yet major criteria are deliberately disregarded or breached to give way to its organizers’ or whoever else’s satisfaction by making the “favorite-without-brain” win? agree?
P.S.: trying her best, though, would not merit a good remark because her “best” wasn’t the best at all! for her “best” to merit a high sounding remark, her “best” should have been the correct usage of English! Moreover, scapegoating, like “she’s only a college freshman”, cannot absolve her from her weakness. it’s just like somebody who cannot be absolved from punishment for the offense he committed, though he claims “ignorance about the law”.

Janina San Miguel has the best poise and ramp skill of all candidates. It is not the content of her answer nor English grammar, it is the confidence and poise which she exhibited. Remember how Yvonne Ryding of Sweden did the same thing in the Q&A, well she romped the Miss Universe title. Pinky Amabuyoc, Miss Philippines to Miss World in 1968, was a very good ramp model,exhibited quiet charm, got criticized by Phil press for having artificial teeth and no beauty. SHe place placed 4th in Miss World and was the choice of the betting odds. Folks in the Philippines, judging candidates based on English skills is one colonial mentality we have inherited from USA> Listen how barbaric the English of most Latin and European candidates are in beauty pageants- but they still command attention and emerge winners. If you think it takes good command of English to win these days, you are out of touch. Foreign TV audiences and judges are captivated by innate charm and poise, not English skills. Get that !

I salute the courage of San Miguel.. kahit out of this world na sinasabi nya sige lang, tatapusin nya linya nya. Alam nya sasabihin nya ang problema ndi nya matranslate in english kaya iba-iba sinasabi nya.
Aminin man natin sa hindi sya lang talaga may dating nung gabi… stand out beauty sya that night.. malaki talga percentage ng long gown and swimsuit sa criteria as MW candidate.. fast track ang labanan dun sa Ms World na kahit bobo ka eh basta may ganda ka pasok ka sa finals. Positive naman ako sa magiging outcome nya kasi bata pa at malakas ang loob. Ung trainer na lang siguro nya ang bahala dun.
Kung ndi matuto ng ingles ng isang buwan papasukin ng callcenter kahit 2 months…. fluent na yan.. hehehehe.. aabot pa naman sa pageant yan..

well, i agree with one of the comments that its not just really about knowing how to speak in English that makes a winner, shes quite charming and poised inspite of her booboo. to maintain that kind of calmness and confidence when the crowd was practically laughing hysterically is no easy feat. I agree too, that she can be transformed with comm training. The judges saw something in her that we just didnt see yet, who knows, she might be a diamond in the rough.. To her mentors, pls train her well. it will not be easy though =)

Very disappointed ako talaga sa sagot ng candidate #15 nanghihinayang ako considering she’s got the two major special award best in Swimsuit & Best in Long Gown, bet ko sya talaga from the start kasi napaka stunning nya kaya lang talaga bumagsak sya sa question and answer portion. Iha! magiging problema mo yan pag nagrepresent ka na internationally lalo pa sa Miss World Pageant na sobrang laki ng discremation, dapat siguro Mrs. Araneta pag aralin yan sa Speech Power tutal naman sa November pa ang laban nya medyo mahaba haba pa ang panahon para magkaroon sya ng confident at mahusay na pananalita esp. in English Language. Ang akala ko nga candidate #13 ang lalabas kasi medyo maayos pa ang sagot nya. (n replace to #15). From start alam ko na rin ang lalabas #7, #15 at #2 kaya lang nga nasira ang #15 sa Q & A.
Si candidate #7 from the start alam ko na lalabas kaya lang di ko alam kong World Or Universe pero talagang maganda sya – sa picture lang medyo chubby sya dapat siguro medyo mag pa slim pa sya, ksi alam ko sa Int’l. Pageant kailangan talaga slim talaga ang built ng katawan at pag rumampa sa swimsuit at long gown mabilis at gracefull ang movement. Si candidate #8 bagay talaga sya sa runner’s up kasi tingin ko sa kanya “chubby” sya pero may looks naman sya. Kailangang kayong tatlo (3) ay magkaroon ng intensive training sa mga magagaling na coacher sa speech power I’ll recommend Anthony Pangilinan to do the coach para sa pagsasalita at Mr. Osmel Souza sa pagrampa (coach of Miriam Quiambao). Ganoon pa man ang naging tingin ng tao sa candidate #15 – huwag naman nating masyadong i down ang pagkatao nya, isipin na lang natin na masyadon syang na excite at she made the cut to 10. Tulungan nating ma bost ang kanyang morale para naman sa laban nya ay hindi sya mawalan ng pag asa at magkaroon sya ng confident sa sarili. Ang tamang sagot kasi san tanong #15 ay simply like his “My family did a special role for being very supportive to me from start when I joining the Binibining Pilipinas Pageant, Thank you”. di ba puede ganyan lang ang sagot ok na. We’ll anyway pagbutihin nyong 3 san Int’l. Pageant at gumawa kayo ng pre’empt question na possible na pueding itanong sa inyo kapag na doon na kayo sa mga respective location ng inyong contest. Good Luck to all of you—kaya doubt ako Miss Universe kong manalo tayo kasi ang reigning Miss Universe ay Miss Japan which came from the land of Asia Group–but don’t you worry girl…kahit makapasok ka lang san semi-finalist ok na yon.

What the fudge happened to Bb. Pilipinas? I mean, yeah it’s a beauty pageant, meaning, you have to be beautiful. Still, you have got to have brains, for Pete’s sake. You’re representing our country. She didn’t have to try sooo hard to speak in English. Tagalog is just fine. We’re all Filipinos, she’s a Filipina. Plus, she could have avoided all these criticism. She’s now an ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines. What will the others think of us Filipinos now? Bless her heart.

I would suggest to BPCI and to Mrs. Estella Marquez de Araneta next year the Binibining Pilipinas Beauty Pageant to do one (1) Question and Answer to the Final (5). (the universe, world and int’l. respectively). Kailangan yong 3 major awards ay gawing isang tanong lamang para malaman ang bigat ng sagot ng bawat isa ( like the past format of Miss Universe which the Final 2 has one question to be answered ) at yong may pinaka magandang sagot sa tatlo ang syang magkakamit ng pinaka mataas na score o ira rank into Miss World (dahil mas mataas yata nag antas ng World), 2nd is Miss Universe and 3rd is Miss Int’l. The semi finalist who made the cut into 10 ang may prelimenary questions dapat dito ang mga questions ang iba-iba (like the usual format of BCPI), then the Final 5 has (1) question to be answered at ira rank into 2nd & 1st runner’s up and then yong 3 for the world, universe and int’l. At saka I would suggest na kapag pinili na yong semi finalist huwag naman kapag ka Q&A portion naka 2 piece sila.Dapat naman during interview portion doon sa Long Gown Competition segment gawin ang Q&A para naman mas desenting tingnan ang mga beauty’s kapag ka tinatanong sila at di nakabandera ang kanilang katawan habang tinatanong. Like yong format ng Miss Universe – (Parade of Nations-pagpapakilala ng bawat isa, 2nd Choosing the Semi Finalist dressed in Bestida na pare pareho ang yari. The 10 or 15 Semi Finalist ang maglalaban sa Swimsuit & Long Gown segment. Sa format ng Miss Universe ginagawa nila ang Q&A pag katapos ng Long Gown segment then announcing the Best in Long Gown and Miss Photogenic, the next the much awaited Coronation. Hindi masamang gumaya ng format ng konti sa Miss Universe. I know na dapat ang presentation ay Pinoy Touch at may uniqueness pero sa ganda ng sequences at format ng Miss Universe dapat gawain nating ganoon, anyway we are in 20’s, global na tayo ngayon-sana maging hightech naman tayo. I like the Long Gown segment in this Binibining Pilipinas 2008 kung saan habang rumarampa sila nag se serenade naman ang makaluma nating tugtugin-da best talaga-ito yong talagang pinoy presentation pero sana yong na una kung suggestions ay gawain natin para sa mas magandang presentasyon. Again to the Final 3 – you’ll have to take intensive training in preparation of the said Major Int’l. Pageant. Best of Luck to everyone.

‘di naman siguro problema ‘yung intelligence ni Ms. Janina San Miguel sa Ms. World kasi beauty at voting ang basehan doon. Na – mental block lang sya at masyado nyang dinama yung pressure kaya siguro sya nagkaganun. Bkit kaya ganun yung punctuation nya at grammar? ‘di naman pipitsuging school ang UE ah, FYI there are two candidates studying from UE, Ms. Janina from UE – Recto and the other one from UE – Caloocan and a tourism student. Di ko alam name nung isa pero pareho ko na silang nakita at syempre pareho silang maganda. Anyway dapat suportahan pa rin natin sya sa Ms. World at ‘di dapat natin pagtawanan ang pagkakamali nya kasi pinoy din tayo, parang pinagtawanan na rin natin ang ating sarili. Good Luck sayo!!

Miss Universe in Vietnam this year is absolutely unbelievable….
great contenders are Puerto Rico, Mexico, Venezuela, Japan, Colombia, USA and Dominican Republic…….. Philippines have 10%chance to make it to the top 10, I think….

maybe janina is good english but since she is over confident she did not think well in the sense that she did not answer the question well and as a viewer i will not say any bad comments to her coz i know that we are not perfect and we are always entitled to commit mistakes so i can say that b4 judging others you must take a look first to your self if you are really intelligent

Janina i dont want to blame you for winning the crown but bcoz of what judges made thier decision. its just like a mirror in our society a simple manipulation that people made them suprised at the end of the event….janina u have time to prove to us that we are wrong and u have d’ gats to represent our country ” philippines ” goodluck in the big event…

Sa lahat ng nagcomment tungkol sa pagka panalo ni no.15 hinde kasalanan ng mga judges yun, laging frontline lang ang magkaroon ng judges.. kung baga pang posing lang sila.. BAgo pa ang pageant alam na ng organizer kung sino ang tatanghalan bb.pilipinas kahit anong kapalpakan o kagalingan pa ng candidate kung sya na ang nakatakdang manalo, sya na… kaya nga next time wag na kayong magpagent para mangolekta ng sponsorship kinakuarta nyo lang ang mga company na sponsor sa pageant instead bigyan nyo nalang ng title ang gusto nyong babae para maging ms.world atleast hinde pa nakakihya sa part ng babae ang maging BOBO sa buong mundo!!!! pinapakita nyo lang sa buong mundo ang kawalang hiya ng pilipino sa larangan ng beauty pageant. At bilang TFC nakakahiya man pero hindi kasalanan ni janina ang maging ms.world naaawa ako para sa kanya.. paano nalang kaya sya nakakatulog sa mga mura ng tao sa kanya…. At para sa organizer sana makarma ka sa ginagawa mo!!!!

Luto yun, and the fact that there are foreign judges… Ambassadors fr. japan and the USA, actually nagulat sila. I\’ve talked to an attache hehe their ambassador was shocked s results. also Amb. Kenney was speechless.( i work in the diplomatic world thats y I know they are hiding the dismay they felt in that competition. Pinag-judge pa sila kung lulutuin lng ang pageant! may politika na yan kc eh. plus no#15 got the best in swim suit and long gown awards so, i think indi impt. ung Q and A…
I have so much respect the bb.pilipinas competion, but it is not as glorious as it was before. To think that some girls who are dreaming to join the contest are studying VERy well, taking care of their precious selves and building a carreer, just to be part of that prestigious competition and to live one of their dreams. (that’s my plan and so as the other girls out there) and I have to admit I’m planning to join bb.pilipinas, when my right time comes.

SANA DIN LANG PARENTS AND MANAGERS who are building a girl’s capacity to be a beautyqueen must give full support on their girls education esp. communication skills not just on having theis skin bathed with milk, having nails done and posture, modelling and their attitude as well.

Hindi naman malaking kawalan sa mga buhay nyo ang pagkapanalo ni Janina. Ang dapat nyo maisip pano nyo matutulungan lahat ng mga nag-aaral na masagad ang matututunan nila sa klase para hindi sila matulad.
Sa lahat ng nagcomment dito, sumali kayo sa pageant. Sige na. Madali lang pala. Marunong lang mag-ingles pwede na. Sige sumali kayo, tignan natin kung san kayo pupulutin. I’m fun of watching beauty pageant when I was still in Pinas as in live and I felt sorry what I’ve read with all the comments here. Isn’t it really a craft? But they are really beautiful. Wala ba talagang brains. Ano kaya yun? ANong ginawa nila? Pano nanalo? Hay buti narin lang diko na napapanood mga ganyan kung ganyan din lang.
