How Difficult is Mathematics to You?

One of my “sidelines” during my first 5 years of teaching was tutoring mathematics to students. It was quite a good sideline. At that time, I earned some 100-150 pesos per hour for 2-3 hours per session. However, I find it somewhat disturbing knowing how many students (and even college graduates) find mathematics up to this time as either boring or very difficult. I can’t really blame them. Maybe my former professor was right in saying “in most cases, those who are good in math are really born with it”. However, I have always begged to disagree with him. I have always believed that like any field of endeavor, people can learn to love mathematics just like the way they love their pet, a book or a movie.

On the other hand, thinking of the economics in this area, I will admit math tutors will be jobless without people having some difficulty in mathematics. In fact, tutorial groups have become so organized they have become big companies located worldwide. Honestly, it’s only now that I have realized that math tutoring is this lucrative. Moreover, one of the companies I’m talking about is Club Z! Tutoring Services which claims that they are the world’s largest one-on-one tutoring program. Their website indicates that their tutors have helped over 100,000 students improve their grades, raise their test scores, learn productive study skills, build their academic self-confidence, and reach their full potential in mathematics through Math Tutoring. As a tutor myself, I cannot disregard the kind of assistance math tutors provide. Time has proven our worth in assisting students learn mathematics outside school premises, (and in most cases) in the comfort of the students’ homes and at their most convenient time.

For anyone who might be interested in their services, either for themselves or for their children, you should check out their site for more details. I’m sure one way or another they can help you with your difficulty in mathematics.

  2. Hay naku friend, I really admit Math is my waterloo. I’m glad I was able to survive all my Math subjects. Hehe. Nung first year college ako, 1st time akong tinawag mag prove ng equation sa board, tapos tigre pa yung prof namin, nanginginig talaga ako sa nerbyos! Di ko nasagutan! :lol

    Fren,

Hindi ka nag-iisa. Lalo pa ngayon eh dumadami ang may ayaw sa math. My own theory about this incident is culture. It has always been inculcated to many that math is difficult and/or boring. But to be honest, math is truly exciting. It’s complex, I admit but highly engaging if you put your heart into it.

Naalala ko tuloy when I was teaching in college nung sinabi mong nanginig ka sa nerbyos nung tinawag kang mag-prove ng equation. Hahahaha! Ganyang ganyan ang mga student ko noon. Buti na lang at di ako mukhang terror kahit medyo seryoso.

I was praying hard then that my prof won’t call me, pero natawag pa rin ako, haha! Mejo may *ganti* mode nga ako eh, kasi when I was teaching programming in college, *100 years ago*, nag terror-terror-ran ako, nakita ko rin sa mga stude ko yung *nerbyos* na yun, haha.

And to prove na tlgang waterloo ko ang Math, 75 ang score ng Math ko sa NCEE, yun lang naman ang mababa, in fairness to me. :)

  3. Sa high school, naiintindihan ko naman yung mga lessons namin sa math, but i just don’t have a passion for the subject. Naiinis kasi ako kapag sinabayan na ng letters yung numbers he he…

  4. i know what you mean friend… I was also tutoring few students after work when I was still in the Philippines. Math is one of the, let’s call it “weakest link” (hehehe) of many students. Add Chemistry and Physics to Math… Combine the three together then you will get a lot of complains or swearing from them mainly because they think that the three are like thorns in their report card if they’ll take them lightly.

HOnestly, I didn’t love Math that much when I was in high school. I appreciate it but I don’t love it 100%. I promise myself that I will never pursue a course related to Math but since I like Chemistry… I totally forget about the fact that Math and Chemistry works side by side especially in higher Chem courses… So there you go, I was trapped with my own bait and that’s the time that I left no option but to love Math. Fortunately, I totally fell in love with Math in the long run until I graduated in college… hehehe

kudos to you my friend Jessie at love mo ang Math…

    Sweet Lullaby,

Maybe it’s my orientation with the subject at a very young age. Kahit mga kapatid ko at magulang very good sa math kasi. So, as young kids eh nagkokontest pa kami in solving puzzles at problems in math.

  6. Wahahaha..Mathematics I hate it too but I am not weak in it. I can understand the lesson today then next week I already forgot it and need to start all over again. I remember during my third year high-school I was embarrass by an algebra teacher because of not saying any word with her question. As in I just looked in her eyes and then try to remember the answer and then he shouted over and over my family name. I grabbed my school bag and then run away from that classroom hahaha. Because of it I was slapped being one of the top ten because she is the only one who gave the line of seven grade which caused trouble with my late father. What a terrible experienced. When I was in first year college I find it hard with the accounting 1/2 subject and then my teacher just asked me what grade I want then I said “the one I deserved Sir” haha he gave me 2.0 which is not bad right? Chickboy yung prof ko lol! Now I don’t have a problem with my kids about mathematics because I got a genious partner in life. Happy blogging everyone and to you Sir Jessie.:)

Joy, understandable na yan fren. Like I said, kahit ngayon madaming galit sa math. Allergic sila sa subject na yan. Hahaha!

Pero seriously, kung minsan nakaka-bother din dahil very important ang math sa madaming fields, take blogging for example.

It’s good ino-orient nyo ang mga kids nyo at very early ages to love math. you know dyan din nagumpisa yung interest ko sa math eh. It served me very very well in the long run up to now so no regrets having loved math that much.

Oh, I didn’t know you’re a living proof of tutorial benefits, Bing. Anyway, though tutorials may be expensive at times, the benefits are undoubtedly undeniable. However, some people have this wrong connotation that when you hire a tutor, you’re weak in that area. That is something I’d like to point out here. Even students who are good in a subject (math, for example) still need some “enhancements” by way of additional reinforcement in learning through tutorials. Not all who undergo tutorials lack the capacity to make good in the subject.
