The (Google) Empire Strikes Back

This post may sound like George Lucas’ masterpiece, Star Wars. The title is I think the fifth installment of the global blockbuster film. But, nah. I’m not talking about the rich director’s movies. It’s all about our friend Google’s slapping of page ranks again. This topic is not new and I’m sure some of you out there are already bored with the subject of page rank slashing.

However, let us try to focus more on PPP posties and how page rank can affect their income. First off, page rank in the PPP network is still considered valuable as most advertisers require a certain PR before a blogger can grab an opportunity. Some advertisers don’t require Google Page Rank, though. They require IZEA rank.

The above update on rank requirement in PPP may sound good news to some posties but having a good Google Page Rank can further increase the number of possible opps a blogger can grab. Truly, a sweet deal if a blogger can have good standings in both ranking standards. This goes to show that high numbers are good allies in most cases in blogging.

However, recent developments and buzz by friends who are members of PPP indicate that a high number of opps can really hurt your page rank. From data I have collected through buzz, articles read and firsthand testimonials of close blogger-friends, the following results show how strict Google has become on PPP by way of penalizing posties’ page ranks:

  • After an average of 3 weeks doing paid reviews assigned by the company; and
  • After an average of 6 successive paid reviews

These results are non-conclusive and the sampling frame is not enough. Only about 30 bloggers’ experiences were included here. I just hope this post will help if you are a PPP postie. The results are based on average rates and it may vary on a case-to-case basis.

You may include in your comments your own experience so I can come up with a more reliable set of data for the benefit of other PPP posties who never knew of this before.

  1. if that is the case, i’ll narrow down my opps in my blog. *natakot*. But in my two months with PPP, surprisingly i am not affected at all. Hope it won’t happen. Right now, i minimize my OPPS since i am targeting PR5 for my blog.

  3. What the heck with google PR. It’s not new anymore. They did it to a lot of bloggers already, taking away their PRs. They gave and they took away. Where’s their credibility? At least I’m thankful I enjoyed the PR even just for a short period and I earned a decent some of money, he-he!

And the advertisers would not mind kung naka no follow yung link, basta ba naka-indexed lang sa google.

Yung isang blog ko PPP, after writing 10 posts with them, hayun inalis na ang PR.

    Paano ba ginagawa yung “no-follow”?

  6. I agree with Mam Marlene. There are things that we need to remember, only simple things na nga lang hinihingi ng google. Tapos when writing paid post, do not use Payperpost or ppp in your tags. Or you can use hide category plugin. In my case, ginagawa ko sia lahat. Wala kang makikita sa blog kong PPP or any. It’s better to be careful than to lose my PR4. sayang eh.

I know the “no follow” feature is automatic to all wordpress users. Is this true Mam Marlene?

I am a victim of this and whenever I read about how posties are treated by google, I cant help but feel…sad. I know becuase i experience this now. Google slapped but still earning.

Hehehe! You’re right about saying ok din kung may target PR ka. It could serve you well in the long run.

That’s good for you, my friend. You can still make more I think by just doing great reviews on products because you have established yourself as a good reviewer with some networks.

Yup, that’s true. Dapat naka-nofollow yung mga links within the body of the post.

  11. @ Liza,

By default your blog (either WP or blogspot) is on “NOFOLLOW”. If indeed you have installed a “DOFOLLOW” plugin like my blog, then you have to do it manually. But the way I see it, if you haven\’t done any tweaking with your blog in this area, then your links are still “NOFOLLOW”

  12. @ Ambo (again),

At any rate, it’s better na magingat pa rin tlga if you really care about PR.

For me yun kasi ang policy ko. You can still get your PR back next time Google updates. Don’t worry too much dear friend. Basta enjoy blogging and you’ll get your rewards. :-)

In my case, i placed the metatag=”robots” at content=”index, no follow” sa index page ko. But if you don’t have the meta tag, you can place “nofollow” manually everytime you post paid links. I’m not an expert on this but it seems it works. Got to go muna…

  24. I got a PR4 and a PR3 blog, both with paid posts. But I dont have badges on my sidebar. And I don’t do successive reviews. As much as possible, i want to keep the 3:1 ratio, or make sure that the topmost post at the end of the day is not a paid one.

  25. Lazarus,

That’s exactly the point. If yo do successive reviews, Google will crawl it and soon determine you’re being paid to do reviews. the 3:1 ratio is a good one as it is mostly recommended by other networks to avoid being tagged as a postie (at least in Google’s eyes). As to badges, general affiliate badges are ok. Most of my badges have been in my sidebar since i started blogging. I honestly think their existence did not affect my PR at all at any time.

    Pinay Mommy,

If you’re using firefox, righ-click on a commentator’s link then you’ll see if the relationship is “NOFOLLOW”, “EXTERNAL NOFOLLOW” or “EXTERNAL”.

If the relationship is either “NOFOLLOW” or “EXTERNAL NOFOLLOW”, then your blog is NOT on DOFOLLOW. If the relationship is external, then your blog is on “DOFOLLOW”.

If you’re using blogger as your blog publishing tool, you may use Haloscan to remove the NOFOLLOW tags for comment links. You may search Haloscan on Google then download the plugin.

For Wordpress users, a lot of DOFOLLOW plugins are available like Lucia’s plugin, among others.
