WordPress Error Caused my Blog to Be Inaccessible

Yeah, right. It’s one of the many dreaded events a blog owner hopes not to happen often. My server was down for an hour or two (I think). It scared the living daylights out me knowing how important it is to keep a blog running, with visitors or without visitors.

For all those who visited, I’m sorry if you chanced this event. This site is self-hosted and though my web host (Hostmonster) has a good reputation of keeping their customers’ websites up and running smoothly, the thought that this blog’s account was hacked crossed my mind instantaneously. I was about to go out of the house then this problem came without notice. I felt like I didn’t want to go out anymore. Lol!

The error message indicated three possible causes:

  1. Wrong username and/or password
  2. Config.php error
  3. MySQL database error

The second and third reasons are acceptable. The first is not. I’ve always kept my username and password in a safe place – inside my head. The possibility that the two have been hacked could have been unbearable for me. Just imagine someone else is answering your shouts at the cbox and posting articles at will, without the rightful owner’s consent. If that happens to you then I’m sure you’ll freak out after having posted some 61 articles (this being the 62nd).

Your web server being down can happen once in a while though. But the thought of you not being able to make use of what you paid for the way you want it and when you want it can really be a pain in the a*s. Sometimes I wonder if free publishing tools like Blogger and Wordpress.com experience the same thing. For self-hosted blogs like this one, this is truly one traumatic event. It’s a good thing it didn’t for a day or longer. Wheww!

  1. It’s seems normal that the server might be down at times. But to get errors like you mentioned, particularly the first and second are not server-related. I don’t know, I’ve never experienced such. When my host server is down, it shows the usual can’t find the page page. It kept me thinking, though.

Thanks for the info, brother. I just don’t know if the same thing holds true for other users. However, it could be that the server has been really experiencing some problems lately. Thanks for your patience in waiting for the page to load. Diyos ti agngina!

i hope so too. that’s perhaps one event self-hosted bloggers hope not to happen. your server being down can cause so much damage if the site you’re running is very important. even for blog sites, this incident is bothersome.

I found out from other WP users that this problem happens once in a while. Of course, since we cannot monitor our sites 24/7, this must have happened to us without us knowing it. Let’s just hope it won’t happen frequently in the future.

  23. Jessie, I know how you feel!

When my sites are down I get panic attacks because this is how I make money…. not to mention my advertisers will start emailing me like crazy.

Sometimes it does happen. What can you do? I just hate it when it happens right before I go for a night out and I have to make excuses why I can’t make it.

Luckily my husband understands because he has his own server also.

Lucky for you my friend for having a husband and a server. :-)

It’s really a bothersome incident especially when you make money out of your blog. Besides, the emails and everything associated with a server malfunction can really cause a lot of trouble. You gave me an idea there. Maybe i should buy my own server. Thanks.

  25. Hi,Jessie, you are right, if you don\’t have updated WP, you could be easy meal for such hack. Did you know, some WP version are piece of cake to steal username and password?

Anyway, you survived best of luck,

  26. @ Navin,

Yup, i have also reviewed them before and really, they are the best in the business in my view for having tried 3 web hosts. Their servers seldom go down but it’s really a frightening thing to happen – to be hacked.
