Upgrading to WordPress 2.3.2 in an Automated Way
Upgrading to the latest release of WordPress (this time version 2.3.2) can sometimes be heartbreaking. A lot of sad things can happen especially during the upgrade process where the transfer of updated files could fail. WordPress does not provide an automated process for this, but a good plugin can do the trick. Upgrading has its perks, although most of us are still reluctant to do it due to fear of failure.
In my quest for plugins to use in automating the task of upgrading to the latest WordPress version, I have stumbled upon the blog Techie Buzz, whose authors created the plugin I had in mind. The plugin’s name is WPAU (version 0.4) and I really appreciate the authors for sharing their work so that WP users like me can have lesser worries.
You might as well check out their site for other goodies which I’m sure you’ll find invaluable. I will have to try the plugin myself today or tomorrow when my time allows for blog maintenance. I’ll tell you more about it when I have tested it myself.
UPDATE: The plugin works without any apparent problem after the update…

I didn’t know there’s a plugin for upgrading. I will download it for future upgrades. Shanker has referred me one plugin, too, but I don’t know if it’s similar to this.

@ Jennie,
According to WP documentation, the upgrade to WordPress 2.3.2 is an urgent security release that fixes a bug that can be used to expose your draft posts. 2.3.2 also suppresses some error messages that can give away information about your database table structure and limits and stops some information leaks in the XML-RPC and APP implementations.
As a little bonus, 2.3.2 allows you to define a custom DB error page. Place your custom template at wp-content/db-error.php. If WP has a problem connecting to your database, this page will be displayed rather than the default error message.

Great post. I was aware of this plugin, but haven’t attempted to use it yet. I think I prefer to upgrade manually. If something goes wrong, I have no one to blame but myself;)

Thanks for your visit. The plugin in called Commentluv. You can search for the internet about it. I’ve honestly forgotten where I”ve downloaded it.

@ Jennie,
If you use the plugin i have mentioned, there is already a backup function there. It’s actually a cool way to upgrade because everything is practically automated. The backup is a part of the whole process when you run the plugin.

Go to Manage, then Automatic Upgrade, tapos follow the instructions up to the last step. There shouldn’t be any problems basta sinunod mo yung mga steps.

Plugin for upgrading??
It was always an easy thing for me to upgrade.
1. Download Upgrade Edition
2. Go to wordpress dashboard, deactivate all plugins
3. Load FTP client
4. Upload all the extracted contents as instructed
5. Activate all plugins once done.
Easy!!!
Do we really need plugins??

It’s really a matter of choice. For someone like you who knows the workaround for upgrading to the latest WP release, that’s no problem, I think. However, the question is “how about for newbies”?
Having a plugin to do our work especially in a easier way (as perceived by the user) is not a bad thing. It’s really a matter of choosing which method suits you best.

this will be a cool way to upgrade

hi Jessie. I’ve tried upgrading manually before, had to backup important files pa to make sure. But lately, I am relying on my cpanel’s Fantastico, it also works great. No sweat! But the last time I checked, wala pang latest upgrade sa fantastico, so I might as well use this plugin.
thanks!
