I've tried upgrading manually before, had to backup important files pa to make sure. But lately, I am relying on my cpanel's Fantastico, it also works great. No sweat! It was always an easy thing for me to upgrade.

1. Download Upgrade Edition
2. Go to wordpress dashboard, deactivate all plugins
3. Load FTP client
4. Upload all the extracted contents as instructed
5. Activate all plugins once done.

Easy!!!
