Some Blogging Directions for 2008
After posting an article displaying my intent to build a group of Ilocano bloggers, I have received comments and shouts in my shout box showing support to this goal. Perhaps the biggest challenge is to convince locals to join the blog bandwagon. Personally, I know of a lot of people in my home province who have the potential to be very good at blogging care of their excellent writing skills. Hence, one of the goals that I would want to pursue is to slowly build up the group from ground up. I think group building is a great way to have a good head start for new bloggers. From my experience, link building is perhaps one of the most difficult tasks involved in blogging. If a starting blogger is assured of 5-10 links from his group even before he can properly setup his blog, then I think that is already a huge advantage.
Moreover, I would like to write articles where I can integrate mathematics in the discussion. These articles will certainly deal with site metrics like Alexa, Technorati, Link Popularity and some more discussions about Page Rank. I am not actually conscious about these figures because for me, these are simply numbers whose meaning may actually be useless if not fully understood. I myself would like to study these “standards” as part of this adventure called blogging. I have this desire to learn more about the numbers game involved in blogging as this affects everyone in the blogosphere. Actually, online friends encouraged me to investigate on these site metrics and I can see that they have valid points. Blogging is mostly dependent on numbers – traffic, page hits, etc. What distinguishes bloggers from each other are the “perceived need” and reactions to these numbers. As previously posted, I suggest that take these lightly. Getting frustrated with these numbers (when they are usually low in meaning) will not help. Blogging in good faith will always have its merits. Being traffic-hungry at all times has its downside. Just keep it cool when these stats don’t measure up with your expectations. All websites experience downward curves in their stats.
I will still try to carry out the primary objective of this blog which is to write articles about health and medicine. At present I’m writing 4 researches about Nursing and when these studies are done, I might as well post some of them in the future.
I will also create a new blog using the domain name that has remained dormant after 3 months of purchase. My other blog has also taken a backseat due to my commitments outside blogging. I think I must use it now since I have paid $6.50 for it yet it’s becoming a liability. My first web host has already cancelled my account due to misunderstanding and dissatisfaction on my part which restrains me from accessing the web control panel. This is one of the problems with self-hosted blogs. Maybe I should have stick with my old blogs hosted with Blogger or WordPress. My inquisitiveness and experimentations since October last year cost me a lot of time learning how to setup blogs using different blog publishing tools. These issues (WordPress vs Blogger, Self-hosted vs. Free publishing tool) are perhaps the most compelling for new bloggers. I’ve had my own share of headaches relative to these issues and so, if I may suggest to new bloggers reading this, try to make up your mind and read a lot about these things before coming up with a final decision. It will save you a lot of time, energy and money if you seek advice and guidance from more experienced bloggers.
Last but not least, site monetization. Oh, the sweet smell of blog money. Honestly it will have its time in the future. I don’t want to rush things. Add to it the fact that this blog is less than 90 days old (which is one of the requirements of some companies hiring bloggers to review products). As to pay-per-click (PPC) ads in this blog, I’d have to be honest that I’m not all satisfied with the earnings. Soon, I’ll have to delete PPC ads here. Referrals are in the observation phase. I’d like to give them some more time since I’m seeing great potentials. If they won’t make me enough say in 6 more months, then, they too must go. At this stage I’m still observing a lot of things in the blogging world and hopefully I can write about these observations and readers like you will benefit from them. The internet, particularly blogging, is a source of collective knowledge anyway. So, why not share what you know, right?
