Google Page Rank Update
Yesterday, my friend in Laoag City texted me that this blog already has a Page Rank. “So what?” I said, since I was offline and giving a lecture to Nurses at that time.
Upon arriving home, I turned on the PC to check my emails at first. Another text message was again sent to me which signaled my intent to check on my blog for a while. The Google toolbar did indicate a PR4 but after 5 minutes, the progress bar (the one with the green indicator in your toolbar) returned to zero. I thought this was a glitch since I have had experiences in the past indicating that this blog is even PR7. I shrugged it off and moved on to my routine online tasks.
This morning, a blogger-friend congratulated me through the shout box about this blog’s Page Rank. I even replied and said it could only be a glitch (again).
However, after using 3 different Page Rank checkers, I have verified that indeed, this site has gained a PR4. I didn’t really know how to react to this because being skeptical, I thought this blog deserves less (in all honesty). As a new blogger with a 2-month old blog, I didn’t expect it to reach a PR4 in such a short period of time. So I began my investigation regarding Page Rank and I found out that other blogs linked to your blog will affect your future PR – the higher their PR, the higher PR you’ll get. Quality begets quality, so to speak. The formula given in computing Page Rank is similar to (but not exactly the same as) obtaining a weighted mean for a set of scores (PR’s of blogs/sites linked to your blog). It’s purely mathematical so I might as well skip the technical discussion so that you won’t stay away from this page
. Let’s just put it this way, if you are linked to 100 PR5 blogs, 70 PR4 blogs and 40 PR3 blogs, probabilistically, your Page Rank will likely be PR4. In general, the probability of getting a high PR can only be derived if you are somehow linked to blogs/sites with high PR’s, i.e., if you have exchanged links with them or you have left comments in their blogs (which are also credits on your part as a commenter since you are leaving behind your link/s, hence, the term backlink). However, this is only the tip of the iceberg because this is the only algorithm Google published. According to experts, the real algorithm is kept hidden to the public. Therefore, in the final computation, I suspect that other variables play certain roles in determining the “weight” or significance of a page or blog (PR per se). This is just a speculation, but I think a mathematically valid one. I think your blog being indexed in Google also helps. Likewise, if your pages are found through search engines on a regular basis, then that could also be a factor. Well, like I said, these are only speculations. Other variables unknown to most of us bloggers could also be at play in this respect.
What prompted me to believe that these speculations were true are the following: this blog receives 20-30 unique visits per day from search engines (in most cases, search engines placed this blog on first page, within the top 5 entries); I have left thousands of backlinks over a period of more than 3 months (this is because of my inquiries, active participation in other blogs’ discussions and forums prior to setting up this blog); and I was active in linking with other bloggers (regardless of their blog’s PR). Further, these moves were dictated by needs. First, I had to know what I was going into so I had to read thousands of blog posts. Yes, thousand not hundreds. In fact, I was a better bloghopper before I even started blogging. These days, I can no longer accomplish that because I have already built certain connections with some bloggers whose blogs I visit everyday. You too can develop favoritism, I’m sure of that. Besides, during those periods where I can stay in front of the computer the whole day, my early retirement from teaching just got started and writing researches did not consume much of my time yet. This academic period is different. I no longer have the luxury of time to bloghop just like before, so I focused more on writing blog posts and researches.
It all paid off though. My blog is found through the search engines daily, other bloggers offer link exchange on their own volition (and that is a good news, considering the time it takes to link up with others) and my work became a little less complicated because I can earn more with my offline jobs.
But what bothers me is this blog’s PR. Do I even deserve this? Maybe. But the truth of the matter is, I don’t even know how to put it into good use. I was thinking of accepting more paid review offers. Maybe that would be lucrative. Perhaps, I will start accepting paid ads here. That is possible. Whatever it will be, the issue of PR is not clear to me although this index is frequently associated with a higher rate when accepting review offers, which is only one of the possible changes in the direction of this blog.
Nevertheless, in relation to my preset priorities, writing articles will still be on top of my to-do list. Five to seven articles per week is still manageable. This is because I intend to maintain good search engine rankings. Monetizing this blog more is another possible direction care of the new Page Rank but I still have to consider the possible implications.
The moral lesson of this day is simple, if a two-month old blog can have a PR4, then the more can older blogs and newer ones. I’m happy not just for myself but for my online friends who have gained their Page Ranks today. I think this is going to be a good source of inspiration for all of us to work more on our blogs, particularly in the area of writing posts. On a personal note, congratulations to all of you and may this day be the start of cash to pour in to your Paypal accounts.

Galing mo talaga Idol! You surely deserve PR4 and more! I find your site very interesting and informative kaya nga isa ka sa mga 6 favorite sites ko, haha! The PR4 Google gave is truly well-deserved. AT least, all your efforts paid off and it is evident in all your quality-written posts.

Kuya! Ako din! My jaw dropped when I saw my toolbars (SQ&Google) indicating PR4 on my webpage. I just had to drop it and was convinced it to be a glitch. And a few hours after, I saw n/a, I was then sure it was really a glitch. But then I checked my alexa widget it has no data. I was thinking, maybe whoever is responsible for all these are refreshing the system of sorts. I really am so ignorant when it comes to all these technicalities of PR achuchuchu. My blog is only a month old and I just don’t understand Google’s criteria in awarding those ranks. I am not even telling anyone or dare ask anyone I know online because it might just be good for a day for all we know.
But I’d have to admit when I woke up this morning and checked my the toolbars I was giddy. And you\’re right we may never really know the ultimate factor in Mr. Google’s driving criteria aside from all those mathematical ones.
I believe this will be the best time to submit our blogs to those who offer good money for high PR. And when we\’re already in their team, it doesn’t matter anymore if we lose the rank. Wais. Hehe
Thanks kuya for posting this. I was going inside some forums today, andami ngang nagulat, pero with what you shared here, nalinawan ako kahit papano.
God bless po and have a great day!

Seems that I\’ve had it before I knew about PR…haha….Once again, congrats, you deserve it.

Congrats on your PR! I was at PR3 for the longest time, but then dropped to 0 when google penalized those participating in PPP. I thought perhaps on this last update I might gain some PR but there appears to be no change. Not sure what I’m doing wrong…but I guess I’ll keep trying to get it back!

Congrats on the PR4! I was not really concerned about PR until I joined the paid post bandwagon. The sad thing is that, plenty of those with PPP had not regained their PR, despite deleting the banners.

Well google checks the PR from 1 to 4 times in the year… and I think now that you mentioned it.. google is going to check all peoples pagerank!..I hope it checks my blog..!
[reply to this comment]
Gawd, mine had gone to N/A too, I hate the fact that they have to reduce our PR’s just because we monetize our blogs. What’s the catch anyway? They do the same thing, too I guess on their ‘other’ websites perhaps. Damnn, it makes me go all crazy. –,

@ Khayte,
Yeah, that’s the downside of Google PR. I also wonder why they have to penalize blogs that monetize their blogs. It’s a policy Google doesn’t to reveal to the public. For whatever reason, it’s affecting millions of bloggers like us.
