Friendster Spammed?

For two weeks now, I have observed that my Friendster account (the one that I primarily use to communicate with former students, buddies and family members) has been viewed by unknown individuals from unknown locations. Their profiles, however, are very dubious since photos of women wearing skimpy shorts, underwear and sometimes in the nude are used as a primary photo (to catch attention, of course. Call it marketing strategy). On the other hand, when I clicked on their profiles, all I saw were links and a single photo but without any significant details of the individual if this is indeed an individual or a program designed to view legitimate users.

This is perhaps a new spam in Friendster since it is still the favorite social network here in the Philippines (40% contribution worldwide) and other Asian countries like Malaysia (18.8%), Singapore (14.2%) & Indonesia (13.7%). Friendster still enjoys a very high Alexa ranking (Rank 14, as of today). However, as of late, this obvious spam spreading within the network is somewhat annoying because the usual behavior of someone who has been viewed is to view the profile of the person(?) who viewed him. Some Friendster buddies also expressed dismay over this since it became rampant especially on the first week of January.  Personally, I consider this acceptable but a waste of time. I might as well just ignore these “spams” in the future.

Feedbacks about this matter will be highly appreciated. Please feel free to comment.

  5. I really hate Friendster. From day 1 that I started using it (at the behest of my students), I’ve been getting all sorts of spam. To this day, several years later, I will still occasionally get something.

I started using Facebook, less spam but now worried about identity theft … no harassment though and old friends found which is good.

  7. i think i experienced this too when i was starting..and sometimes it can be annoying.

I think from someone in the states that they find facebook and tagged better than friendster. however, since this is the hype in the Philippines..most Filipinos decide to open an account with friendster instead of the other social networks…
